Orthostatic hypotension (OH) and dizziness have been linked to older adult falls. As a treatable condition, the detection of OH is of clinical importance to falls prevention. Gaps in the literature about symptoms associated with OH among older adult fallers, such as dizziness led to this secondary analysis of blood pressure data and reported symptoms. Of the 194 Registered Nurse (RN) documented falls, most (n = 91; 46.9%) failed to meet the prevailing diagnostic criteria for OH; 18 (9.2%) met…

TLDR
OH is a syndrome that is accompanied by unfavorable symptoms such as dizziness, and headaches and can impede the individual's daily activities and quality of life and can contribute to improving thequality of life for older adults and reducing adverse consequences by understanding OH and adequately managing it.
Orthostatic hypotension and associated conditions in geriatric inpatients
TLDR
Screening of orthostatic hypotension was performed in 285 patients aged 75 years and no difference was detected in the use of drugs with psychotropic cardiovascular or diuretic effect, or in their associations.
Prevalence and Prescribed Treatments of Orthostatic Hypotension in Institutionalized Patients with Parkinson's Disease.
TLDR
One half of institutionalized Parkinson's disease patients with PD had OH, of whom half were probably symptomatic, suggesting underdiagnosis and undertreatment.
Impact of care settings on residents' functional and psychosocial status, physical activity and adverse events.

International journal of older people nursing
  • 2015
TLDR
NH residents were more likely to be African American, had more comorbidities, less cognitive impairment, engaged in less physical activity, were more impaired functionally and had less agitation than those in RCFs.
Using Mobile Technology to Assess Balance During a Sit-to-Stand Maneuver Among Older Adults With Fall Risk: A Pilot Study.
TLDR
Analysis of study data from two older adult participants are presented illustrating the applicability for future development of a measure to assess balance during simple movements, using an Android® device attached to participants' center of mass to determine body sway during a simple sit-to-stand maneuver.
Nursing Home Registered Nurses' and Licensed Practical Nurses' Knowledge of Causes of Falls
TLDR
Although licensed practical nurses scored higher than registered nurses in individual categories of falls, when the average score of all 8 categories between groups of registered nurses andlicensed practical nurses is computed, registered nurses scoredHigher in identifying 8 causal reasons for older adults to fall.
Pedestrian Fall Incidence and Slip Resistance Measurements
TLDR
Slip and fall incidences are widely studied owing to their prevalence and associated costs in terms of human suffering and economic burden around the world.
Hospital flooring safety and health: knowledge gaps and suggestions

TLDR
A comprehensive review analysis identified that underlying causes of hospital fall incidents and flooring-attributable infectious illnesses mainly comprised floor types and materials, cleaning chemicals, materials and methods, maintenance and slip-resistance properties.

Falls in the Nursing Home
TLDR
The problem of falls in the nursing home is reviewed, focusing on identifiable causes, risk factors, and preventive approaches, and the major reported immediate causes of falls and their relative frequencies are presented.
Orthostatic hypotension and cardiovascular risk.
TLDR
Orthostatic hypotension results from a failure of neural and circulatory mechanisms to compensate for the reduction in venous return that normally occurs on assuming the upright posture, and is identified as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality.

TLDR
This study suggests that falls are a marker of underlying disorders easily identifiable by a careful postfall assessment, which in turn can reduce disability and costs.

TLDR
Considerable evidence now documents that the most effective (and cost-effective) fall reduction programmes have involved systematic fall risk assessment and targeted interventions, exercise programmes and environmental-inspection and hazard-reduction programmes.
Use of a comprehensive postfall assessment tool to prevent falls
TLDR
A 29.4% reduction in the fall rate, and a 34.0% decline for recurrent fallers, from pre-intervention to intervention year was observed when trained nurses categorized falls according to perceived causes when using a comprehensive PFAT.
