The origin of CPV, more than a decade after its sudden appearance, still remains a mystery. Many hypothesis have been offered (Siegl 1984). Most are based upon CPV arising as a variant of a pre-existing parvovirus that has adapted to canines, either under field conditions or as a result of the selective pressure of attenuation, such as in the production of live vaccines.
