Recently, our understanding of the origin of W UMa-type contact binaries has become clearer. Initial masses of their components were successfully estimated by Y{\i}ld{\i}z and Do\u{g}an using a new method mainly based on observational properties of overluminous secondary components. In this paper, we continue to discuss the results and make computations for age and orbital evolution of these binaries. It is shown that the secondary mass, according to its luminosity, also successfully predicts…

Physical parameters of W UMa type contact binaries and its stability of mass transfer

In this study, we determined the physical parameters of W UMa type contact binaries and its stability of mass transfer with different stellar mass ranges over a broad space by applying the basic

A new mechanism of long-term period variations for W UMa-type contact binaries

W UMa-type contact binaries belong to close binary systems whose components exactly overflow their Roche lobes and share a common convective envelope (CCE). In the last twenty years, the long-term

A SOLAR-TYPE STELLAR COMPANION TO A DEEP CONTACT BINARY IN A QUADRUPLE SYSTEM

The four-color (B, V, Rc, Ic) light curves of V776 Cas are presented and analyzed using the Wilson–Devinney method. It is discovered that V776 Cas is an early F-type (F2V) overcontact binary with a

Photometric analysis and evolutionary stages of the contact binary V2790 Ori

A photometric analysis and evolutionary stages of the contact binary V2790 Ori are presented. The BVRC observations were carried out at the Thai National Observatory. The photometric light curves

Contact binaries at different evolutionary stages

Contact binaries consist of two strongly interacting component stars where they are filling their critical Roche lobes and sharing a common envelope. Most of them are main-sequence stars, but some of

DEEP, LOW MASS RATIO OVERCONTACT BINARY SYSTEMS. XIV. A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF 46 SAMPLE BINARIES

A sample of 46 deep, low mass ratio (DLMR) overcontact binaries (i.e., q ≤ 0.25 ?> and f ≥ 50 % ?> ) is statistically analyzed in this paper. It is found that five relations possibly exist among some

PHYSICAL PARAMETER STUDY OF EIGHT W URSAE MAJORIS-TYPE CONTACT BINARIES IN NGC 188

We used the newly commissioned 50 cm Binocular Network telescope at Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to observe the old open cluster NGC 188 in V and R as

Distribution of physical parameters for 380 contact binaries in the Kepler field

We present the physical parameters (p, T, q, i, f) of 380 Kepler contact binary systems (hereafter called CBs). A statistical study on the CBs is carried out based on a Kepler photometric database.

CONTACT BINARIES AS VIABLE DISTANCE INDICATORS: NEW, COMPETITIVE (V)JHKs PERIOD–LUMINOSITY RELATIONS

Based on the largest catalogs currently available, comprising 6090 contact binaries (CBs) and 2167 open clusters (OCs), we determine the near-infrared (NIR) JHKs CB period–luminosity (PL) relations,

Physical properties and evolutionary status of the W-subtype contact binary V502 Oph with a stellar companion

Multi-color ($B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$) CCD photometric light curves of the contact binary V502 Oph are analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program. The solutions reveal that V502 Oph is a W-subtype

On the origin of W UMa type contact binaries – a new method for computation of initial masses

W UMa type binaries have two defining characteristics. These are (i) the effective temperatures of both components are very similar, and (ii) the secondary (currently less massive) component is

Formation and Evolution of W Ursae Majoris Contact Binaries

The origin and evolution of W UMa systems are discussed based on All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) data and the mean kinematic ages of four subgroups of 97 field contact binaries (FCBs). The period

Evolutionary connection between low-mass detached binaries, contact W UMa systems, and blue stragglers

We analyze the distribution of close binary stars in the orbital semimajor axis—primary mass plane. The reduced spatial density of stars with semimajor axes below 10R⊙ is confirmed. We identify the

Kinematics of W Ursae Majoris type binaries and evidence of the two types of formation

We study the kinematics of 129 W UMa binaries and we discuss its implications on the contact binary evolution. The sample is found to be heterogeneous in the velocity space. That is, kinematically

Angular momentum and mass evolution of contact binaries

Various scenarios of contact binary evolution have been proposed in the past, giving hints of (sometimes contradictory) evolutionary sequences connecting A- and W-type systems. As the components of

Mass loss and orbital period decrease in detached chromospherically active binaries

The secular evolution of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), the systemic mass (M = M1+M2) and the orbital period of 114 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) were investigated after determining

Models of α Centauri A and B with and without seismic constraints: time dependence of the mixing-length parameter

The a Centauri (a Cen) binary system is a well-known stellar system with very accurate observational constraints on the structure of its component stars. In addition to the classical non-seismic

Constraining fundamental stellar parameters using seismology. Application to α Centauri AB

We apply the Levenberg-Marquardt minimization algorithm to seismic and classical observables of theαCen binary system in order to derive the fundamental parameters ofαCenA+B, and to analyze the
