The information disclosure problem begins with a person having an information need that they wish to fulfil (figure 1). Formulation of this need leads to a request q, which has to be matched against the characterization of information objects which are available in the information base (also referred to as information carriers or documents). This process of matching yields a measure for the relevance of objects to the request. The formulation of a request is known to be a cause of problems…

An Overview of Computer Supported Query Formulation

A computer supported mechanism that allows for an easy and intuitive formulation of queries in a language that is as close to the user’s perception of the universe of discourse as possible is envisioned.

Interactive Query Formulation using Query By Navigation

This report proposes an adoption of the query by navigation mechanism that is especially geared towards the InfoAssistant product, and its approach to the formulations of queries is proposed.

Towards an Integration of Evolving Information Systems and CASE-Tools

CASE-Tool technology and evolving information systems are related to each other from two different points of view, by looking how each one can server the other.

Exploring Fact Verbalisations for Conceptual Query Formulation

This article discusses a mechanism to support verbalisation of samples taken from the universe of discourse in the context of a conceptual query language and shows how these verbalisations lead to formulations that closely resemble the expert language.

A Conceptual Language for the Description and Manipulation ofComplex Information

An informal introduction to such a language (LISA-D) for the data modelling technique (PSM), is presented, which is a generalisation of object-role models (such as ER, NIAM and FORM).

Computer Supported Query Formulation in an Evolving Context

This paper focuses on support for query formulation in the context of large conceptual schemata, and uses the idea of query-by-navigation in conjunction with query- by-construction.

Interactive Query Formulation using Spider Queries

The spider query mechanism is proposed as a final corner stone for an easy to use computer supported query formulation mechanism for InfoAssisant and a brief discussion on the integration of the spider quer mechanism with the existing query by navigation, query by construction, and point to point query mechanisms.

Interactive Query Formulation using Point to Point Queries

This article proposes the point to point query mechanism that can be combined with the existing mechanism into an unprecedented computer supported query formulation mechanism, and discusses some of the pragmatic and theoretical issues involved.

Stratified Hypermedia Structures for Information Disclosure

The overall architecture of hypertext (hypermedia) systems, including the fundamentals of the user interface, are described, and a characterisation calculus is presented for the characterisation of structured elements.

Evolution of Data-Base Management Systems

The history and definitions common to data-base technology are discussed, important concepts are discusses, and terminology for use by other papers in this issue is defined.

The entity-relationship model: toward a unified view of data

A data model, called the entity-relationship model, which incorporates the semantic information in the real world is proposed. A special diagramatic technique is introduced for exhibiting entities

The Executive system of COMRADE has provided the basic "living quarters" for all members of the computer-aided design team. Three distinct types of individuals have finally been united in this

Data Modelling in Complex Application Domains

In this paper a general data modelling technique, the Predicator Set Model, is introduced, which is capable of representing complex structures in a natural way.
