We report on the observation of orbital excitations in YVO3 by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at energies across the vanadium L-3 and oxygen K absorption edges. At the V L3 edge, we are able to resolve the full spectrum of orbital excitations up to 5 eV. In order to unravel the effect of superexchange interactions and the crystal field on the orbital excitations, we analyzed the energy and temperature dependence of the intra-t(2g) excitations at 0.1-0.2 eV in detail. Effects of rare-earth size on the electronic structure of La 1 −
The electronic structure of La1−xLuxVO3(x = 0, 0.2, 0.6 and 1) single crystals has been investigated using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy, soft x-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonant soft
Effects of rare-earth size on the electronic structure of La1−xLuxVO3
TLDR
The dd* transitions of the mixed compounds are noticeably suppressed with respect to those of the pure compounds, possibly owing to the formation of C-type orbital ordering induced by large R-site size variances.
Spin-orbit coupling and crystal-field splitting in Ti-doped Ca2RuO4 studied by ellipsometry
In Ca 2 RuO 4 , the competition of spin-orbit coupling ζ and tetragonal crystal field splitting ∆ CF has been discussed controversially for many years. The orbital occupation depends on ∆ CF /ζ ,
High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electron-phonon coupling in honeycomb α−Li2IrO3
The excitations in honeycomb $\alpha$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ have been investigated with high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the O K edge. The low-energy response is dominated by a
Electronic structure and magnetic properties of the half-metallic ferrimagnet Mn 2 VAl probed by soft x-ray spectroscopies
We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn2VAl single crystal by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant
Orbital dynamics during an ultrafast insulator to metal transition
Phase transitions driven by ultrashort laser pulses have attracted interest both for understanding the fundamental physics of phase transitions and for potential new data storage or device
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of bond order and spin excitations in nickelate thin-film structures
The rare-earth nickelates ($R$NiO${}_{3}$) have been subject to intense investigation, mostly because of their rich phase diagrams, comprising a sharp temperature-driven metal-to-insulator transition
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering operators for t 2 g orbital systems
We derive general expressions for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) operators for ${t}_{2g}$ orbital systems, which exhibit a rich array of unconventional magnetism arising from unquenched
The electronic structure of ε′-V2O5: an expanded band gap in a double-layered polymorph with increased interlayer separation
Selective elimination of network connectivity has emerged as an effective means of modifying the electronic structure of materials. Given its unique properties and diversity of polymorphs, V2O5 is an
Direct Measurements of Energy Levels and Correlation with Thermal Quenching Behavior in Nitride Phosphors
Highly efficient narrow-band red emitting (RE) phosphors are the most desired and requested materials for developing illumination grade phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (pcLEDs). This study
