OBJECTIVE To review the literature on the role of oral sex in the transmission of viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs). METHOD A Medline search was performed using the keywords oro-genital sex, and those specific to each infection. Further references from each article identified by Medline were also included, as were relevant references from "Current contents". Oral sex related knowledge and oral sex behavior among homosexual and heterosexual men in Belgrade: A cross-sectional study
TLDR
Oral sex related knowledge deficits and risky oral sex practice exist in both homosexual and heterosexual men, which indicates a need for effective public health campaign and patient education about the risks of unprotected oral sex.
Transmission of nonviral sexually transmitted infections and oral sex.
TLDR
The reader is offered a practical approach with clinically relevant recommendations that may prove useful in his/her daily practice when dealing with STI, and data provide a foundation for understanding diverse STI.
Oral Transmission of Sexually Transmissable Infections: A Narrative Review.
TLDR
In this article, oral transmission of several viral and bacterial infections is reviewed, including human papillomavirus infection, genital herpes, syphilis and gonorrhea, among others.
Association between sexual orientation and sexual contact with the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta
TLDR
The relationship between sexual orientation and the mode of sexual contact with the incidence of HIV infection was evaluated in new male patient who visited sexually transmitted infection clinics at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta during 2016.
Oral sexual behaviors associated with prevalent oral human papillomavirus infection.
TLDR
Oral sex and open-mouthed kissing are associated with the development of oral HPV infection and the odds of infection developing independently increased with increases in the lifetime number of oral sex partners or vaginal sex partners.
Oral and anal sex are key to sustaining gonorrhoea at endemic levels in MSM populations: a mathematical model
TLDR
The authors' models suggest that oral sex has an important role in sustaining gonorrhoea in a population of MSM by providing a pool of untreated asymptomatic infection.
Epidemiology of Mucosal Human Papillomavirus Infection and Associated Diseases
TLDR
HPV is recognized unequivocally as the main causal factor for cervical cancer, and is further responsible for a substantial proportion of many other anogenital neoplasms and head and neck cancers, and the implementation of HPV vaccination has the potential to prevent a substantialportion of HPV-related disease in the future.
Oral Sex, Oral Health and Orogenital Infections
Oral sex is commonly practiced by sexually active male-female and same-gender couples of various ages, including adolescents. The various type of oral sex practices are fellatio, cunnilingus and
Oral sex and condom use among young people in the United Kingdom.
TLDR
Great efforts are needed to publicize the risk of exposure to STDs that many young people face because of unprotected noncoital sexual activities before, as well as after, they enter into relationships involving intercourse.
Prevalence and correlates of heterosexual anal and oral sex in adolescents and adults in the United States.
TLDR
It would be beneficial to track the prevalence of heterosexual anal and oral sex and associated condom use on a more frequent basis.

Orogenital sex and the transmission of HIV among homosexual men
TLDR
Orogenital transmission of HIV appears to occur, but its frequency may be overestimated because of reluctance to report the practice of receptive anogenital intercourse.
Two cases of oral-to-genital HIV-1 transmission
TLDR
Cases of sexually transmitted HIV-1 infection in gay men who consistently claim that they never had anal intercourse, receptive or insertive and the genetic similarities of the 2 viral strains are striking are exemplified.
HIV transmission by oral sex [letter]
TLDR
The analysis of individual cases established that 2 patients were infected by insertive fellatio which was their only sexual practice to the exclusion even of deep kissing; this suggests that saliva can be a vector for HIV in these circumstances.

The increasing number of human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) infections and the shift from traditional risk groups to the general population give reason for reviewing the routes and risks of virus
Hepatitis B in homosexual men: prevalence of infection and factors related to transmission.
Of 3,816 homosexual men examined in five sexually transmitted disease clinics in the United States, 6.1% had hepatitis B surface antigen, 52.4% had antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen, and 3.0%
Sexual transmission efficiency of hepatitis B virus and human immunodeficiency virus among homosexual men.
TLDR
It is suggested that HBV is transmitted 8.6-fold more efficiently than HIV-1 among homosexual men studied and underscore the benefits of both HBV immunization and use of condoms during intercourse to prevent HBV infection.
Intestinal protozoa in homosexual men of the San Francisco Bay area: prevalence and correlates of infection.
TLDR
Factors associated with parasitic infection differed little from those found in previous studies, although significance levels were considerably higher because of the larger size of the study group.
Intestinal parasitic infections in homosexual men: prevalence, symptoms and factors in transmission.
TLDR
It is suggested that the male homosexual community may be an important reservoir of potentially pathogenic protozoa and cleansing of the anus before and sex was associated with a significantly lower prevalence of infection.
