The algebraic decoding of Goppa codes is carried out by using the finite Fourier transform of codewords combined with the use of a Berlekamp-Massey decoder for BCH codes. An algorithm is given that avoids the Chien search procedure for determining the roots of the locator polynomial. A class of generalized Goppa codes is proposed that encompasses the entire class of alternant codes. As a consequence, it follows that the foregoing decoding method is applicable to the decoding of alternant codes.
