Excitation–emission fluorescence matrices of phytoplankton communities were simulated from laboratory-grown algae and cyanobacteria cultures, to define the optical configurations of theoretical fluorometers that either minimize or maximize the representation of these phytoplankton groups in community variable fluorescence measurements.
