Response surface methodology was applied to optimize the growth of the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma in continuous fermentation using peat hydrolysates as substrate. A second-order, complete, factorial design of the experiments was used to develop empirical models providing a quantitative interpretation of the relationships between the two variables studied, dilution rate and pH.
