This article reports on the optimisation of a transverse flux, linear oscillating generator based on transient three dimensional finite element analysis. The generator is intended for use in a free-piston Stirling engine. A quasi-Halbach translator design is proposed. An optimisation approach that minimises overall mass while maintaining a set minimum power output and efficiency is described.
