In this paper, we investigate how the selfsynchronization property of a swarm of Kuramoto oscillators can be controlled and exploited to achieve target densities and target phase coherence. In the limit of an infinite number of oscillators, the collective dynamics of the agents’ density is described by a mean-field model in the form of a nonlocal PDE, where the nonlocality arises from the synchronization mechanism. In this mean-field setting, we introduce two spacetime dependent control inputs… Expand

Density control of large-scale particles swarm through PDE-constrained optimization
We describe in this paper an optimal control strategy for shaping a large-scale swarm of particles using boundary global actuation. This problem arises as a key challenge in many swarm roboticsExpand
Density control of interacting agent systems
A novel algorithm is proposed to compute a feedback control strategy so that, when adopted by the agents, the distribution of them would be transformed from an initial one to a target one over a finite time window. Expand
Mean-field models in swarm robotics: A survey.
The application of fluid approximations, in the form of mean-field models, to the design of control strategies in swarm robotics is surveyed, enabling new insights and provable guarantees on the dynamics of collective behaviors. Expand
Bilinear Controllability of a Class of Advection–Diffusion–Reaction Systems
It is proved that if a target probability density has bounded first-order weak derivatives and is uniformly bounded from below by a positive constant, then it can be reached in finite time using control inputs that are bounded in space and time. Expand
Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators with positive and negative coupling parameters: an example of conformist and contrarian oscillators.
A generalization of the Kuramoto model in which the oscillators are coupled to the mean field with random signs, which displays a traveling wave, in whichThe mean field oscillates at a frequency different from the population's mean natural frequency. Expand

Phase coherence induced by correlated disorder.
A mean-field model of coupled phase oscillators with quenched disorder in the coupling strengths and natural frequencies finds that the system spontaneously synchronizes, once the width of the frequency distribution falls below a critical value. Expand
Novel type of phase transition in a system of self-driven particles.
Numerical evidence is presented that this model results in a kinetic phase transition from no transport to finite net transport through spontaneous symmetry breaking of the rotational symmetry. Expand
Optimal control of continuity equations
An optimal control problem for the continuity equation is considered. The aim of a “controller” is to maximize the total mass within a target set at a given time moment. The existence of optimalExpand
Chimera states for coupled oscillators.
It is shown that the stable chimera state bifurcates from a spatially modulated drift state, and dies in a saddle-node biforcation with an unstable chimer state for a ring of phase oscillators coupled by a cosine kernel. Expand
