The absorption cross section of a system of two spheres is derived by an analytic method based on the separability of the Laplace equation in bispherical coordinates.The method is applicable in the non-retarded limit, i.e., for sphere radius small in comparison with the wavelength of the impinging electromagnetic radiation. The evolvement of the absorption spectrum with decreasing distance between the spheres is demonstrated by numerical calculations. The implications on the interpretation of… CONTINUE READING
