The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is one of the main services of smart grid (SG), which collects data from smart meters (SMs) and sends them to utility company meter data management systems (MDMSs) via a communication network. [] Key Method Then, to overcome this drawback, it is decomposed into two subproblems and a novel software defined network-based AMI communication network is proposed called OpenAMI.
Software Defined Networks-Based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey
TLDR
This paper provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes forSDN-based SGC, and provides detailed survey of security and privacy schemes applied to SDN- based SGC.
Designing of Communication Systems in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) using Wi-Fi Offloading Technology
TLDR
The simulation results indicate that data offloading has the ability for 100% management of AMI traffic, and increasing the coverage range of Wi-Fi antenna has a better performance than increasing the number ofWi-Fi access points.
Smart Grid Virtualisation for Grid-Based Routing
TLDR
This paper proposes a solution based on virtualising the communication infrastructure in the low and medium voltage grid using ONOS SDN and uses Coaty and a Mosquitto MQTT broker to deliver messages to the desired endpoint based on information from the power grid.
5G‐Enhanced Smart Grid Services
TLDR
The chapter illustrates how the 5G novel concepts such as software‐defined networking, network virtualization, and cloud computing offer enhanced services for grid monitoring, data processing, demand‐side management, and electric vehicle charging and discharging coordination.
The Impact of Virtualisation Techniques on Power System Control Networks
TLDR
This work analysed how virtualisation approaches, such as edge computing, brokerage and software-defined networking, can be applied in the area of electricity grid management and control systems and found significant improvements could be achieved in terms of reduced engineering effort, better system management and simplification in high-level system architecture.
Eliminating Rogue Femtocells for IoT Open Meter System Based on Expert System
TLDR
An expert system is developed to detect rogue femtocells and prevent meter collectors from attaching to them and the proposed approach can harden cyber security of OMS.
A Novel Multitier Blockchain Architecture to Protect Data in Smart Metering Systems
TLDR
The results show that the proposed architecture implemented can effectively improve cybersecurity and data protection for smart metering applications and present an optimized consensus algorithm for smart meters called proof-of-efficiency.
Intelligent Network Control
TLDR
This chapter presents an energy-aware multi-controller placement scheme as well as a latency-aware resource management model for the SDWN and proposes a BC-based consensus protocol in distributed SDIIoT, where BC works as a trusted third party to collect and synchronize network-wide views between different SDN controllers.

A scalable load-balancing scheme for advanced metering infrastructure network
TLDR
By distinguishing the DAP selection process from a routing process, this paper devise a load-balancing scheme that distributes metering data to multiple DAPs and shows that the proposed scheme stabilizes the AMI network fast after a DAP is congested.
Scalable Distributed Communication Architectures to Support Advanced Metering Infrastructure in Smart Grid
TLDR
A new performance metric, accumulated bandwidthdistance product (ABDP), is introduced, to represent the total communication resource usages, and demonstrates that the total cost for the centralized architecture scales linearly as O(λN), with N being the number of smart meters, and λ being the average traffic rate on a smart meter.

TLDR
Software defined network (SDN) technology is introduced to the smart grid, which decouples the control plane from the data plane so as to satisfy the communication requirements in the mart grid effectively.
Development and analysis of Wireless Mesh Networks with load-balancing for AMI in smart grid
TLDR
A load balanced routing is introduced in the path identified by the Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP) which uses airtime link metric as path selection parameter to avoid congestion.

Software defined networking applied to the heterogeneous infrastructure of Smart Grid
TLDR
A Software Defined Networking approach has been proposed to manage SG communication system applied to grid monitoring/supervision, and the preliminary feasibility analysis is promising, although a more detailed modeling and analysis of the system is needed due to the extreme heterogeneity of the network.
Software-defined networking for Smart Grid communications: Applications, challenges and advantages
TLDR
A testbed is introduced, enabling the evaluation of multiple failure scenarios such as link disturbance and congestion by analysing corresponding fast recovery and prioritization solutions, and results indicate the advantages of SDN compared to traditional routing and Quality-of-Service mechanisms, providing a more reliable communication network, which is able to handle complex failure scenarios.
