Nonperturbative terms in the free energy of Chern-Simons gauge theory play a key role in its duality to the closed topological string. We show that these terms are reproduced by performing a double scaling limit near the point where the perturbation expansion diverges. This leads to a derivation of closed string theory from this large-N gauge theory along the lines of noncritical string theories. We comment on the possible relevance of this observation to the derivation of superpotentials of…

Topological strings on Calabi–Yau manifolds are known to undergo phase transitions at small distances. We study this issue in the case of perturbative topological strings on local Calabi–Yau…

OPEN-CLOSED DUALITY: LESSONS FROM MATRIX MODEL

Recent investigations involving the decay of unstable D-branes in string theory suggest that the tree level open string theory which describes the dynamics of the D-brane already knows about the…

We propose a nonperturbative definition of two-dimensional quantum gravity, based on a double-scaling limit of the random-matrix model. We derive an exact differential equation for the partition…

We study IR-renormalon divergences in N=1 supersymmetric Yang Mills gauge theories and in two dimensional non linear sigma models with mass gap. We derive, in both types of theories, a direct…
Superstrings and topological strings at large N

We embed the large N Chern–Simons/topological string duality in ordinary superstrings. This corresponds to a large N duality between generalized gauge systems with N=1 supersymmetry in four…
Chern-Simons gauge theory as a string theory

Certain two dimensional topological field theories can be interpreted as string theory backgrounds in which the usual decoupling of ghosts and matter does not hold. Like ordinary string models, these…
