}This study is based on the examination of histological sections of specimens of different ages and of adult ossicles from macerated skulls representing a wide range of taxa and aims at addressing several issues concerning the evolution of the ear ossicles in marsupials. Three‐dimensional reconstructions of the ear ossicles based on histological series were done for one or more stages of Monodelphis domestica, Caluromys philander, Sminthopsis virginiae, Trichosurus vulpecula, and Macropus…

Carpal ontogeny in Monodelphis domestica and Caluromys philander (Marsupialia).

The aim of this work was to document adult form and the pattern of mesenchymal tissue condensation and formation of chondrification and ossification centers in the hand of two marsupials, and to find out whether there is sexual dimorphismus in the carpals, as has been reported for some didelphids.

This study uses high‐resolution X‐ray computed tomography to reinvestigate humpback whale fetuses from the Kükenthal collection at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, thus, extending historic descriptions of their skeletogenesis and providing for the first time sequences of cranial ossification for this species.
Comparative Myology and Evolution of Marsupials and Other Vertebrates, With Notes on Complexity, Bauplan, and “Scala Naturae”

Didelphis is anatomically more plesiomorphic than are rats and humans, but its musculature is more complex than that of humans, which supports the existence of a common, easy recognizable therian Bauplan.
Development of the Ethmoid in Caluromys philander (Didelphidae, Marsupialia) With a Discussion on the Homology of the Turbinal Elements in Marsupials
- BiologyAnatomical record
- 2014
The development of the ethmoid of Caluromys philander, the bare‐tailed woolly opossum, is described based on serial sections of six pouchlings, and computed tomography images of an adult skull suggest that endoturbinal III has a developmental pattern that differs from other endoturbinals, and the name interturbinal should be retained for the adult structure.
PHYLOGENETIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE EAR OSSICLES IN MARSUPIAL MAMMALS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO DIPROTODONTIANS: A CHARACTER ANALYSIS
- Biology
- 2005
A composite phylogeny summarizing published molecular and morphological data was used to map the characters, revealing homoplasy in all three ossicles, and the two alternative phylogenies of phalangeriforms being monophyletic or paraphyletic receive equal support from ossicle characters.
Ear ossicle morphology of the Jurassic euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya and evolution of mammalian middle ear
- BiologyJournal of morphology
- 2018
The stapes and incus of the euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya from the lower Upper Jurassic of northern China are reported, which represent the earliest known mammalian middle ear ossicles and suggest development of the definitive mammalianmiddle ear (DMME), which has evolved at least three times independently in mammals.
