The paper presents a three-dimensional numerical study of the bifurcations and onset of chaotic regime for the thermoconvective oscillatory flow in cylindrical liquid bridge. Three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations in Boussinesq approximation are solved numerically by finite volume method. Silicone oil 1cSt, with rather large Prandtl number, Pr=18.8, is chosen as test liquid. The simulations are done at normal gravity conditions and unit aspect ratio. The dependence of viscosity of the fluid…
Transition to Chaos of Buoyant-Thermocapillary Convection in Large-Scale Liquid Bridges
To cooperate with the Chinese TG-2 space experiment project, the transition routes to chaos of buoyant-thermocapillary convection were experimentally researched in large-scale liquid bridge of 2cSt
On the transition to 3D modes for channel flow past a square cylinder
We consider the case of transient three-dimensional, incompressible and isothermal channel flow of a newtonian fluid past a symmetrically confined obstacle of square cross section at zero incidence.
Origin of Axially Running Waves in Liquid Bridges
A supercritical three-dimensional thermoconvective flow in a long non-isothermal liquid bridge with aspect ratio Γ = 1.8 is numerically investigated under terrestrial conditions. Study of the flow
Peculiarity of 3D Flow Organization in Soret Driven Instability
Abstract Three-dimensional time-dependent numerical calculations are performed in a cubic cell filled with a binary mixture of water (90%) and isopropanol (10%). The system is heated from above while
Effect of the supporting disks shape on nonlinear flow dynamics in a liquid bridge
The stability of convective flows in a non-homogeneous temperature field is affected by the shape of the container hosting the fluid. We present a nonlinear two-phase computational study of
Experimental study on dynamics of coherent structures formed by inertial solid particles in three-dimensional periodic flows.
Experiments wherein two different types of PAS-forming particles were used simultaneously revealed the destructive role of collisions between the particles on formation of structures, and it was shown that the formation time grows with the decrease of the Stokes number.
Hydrothermal waves in two-dimensional liquid layers with sudden changes in the available cross-section
Purpose Hydrothermal waves represent the preferred mode of instability of the so-called Marangoni flow for a wide range of liquids and conditions. The related features in classical

Multistability of oscillatory thermocapillary convection in a liquid bridge.
The onset of temporal nonperiodicity was shown to be associated with development of broadband noise in spectra and preceded by a quasiperiodicity, the largest investigated value of the Reynolds number.
From stationary to complex time-dependent flows at moderate Rayleigh numbers in two-dimensional annular thermal convection
Two-dimensional nonlinear thermal convection in a cylindrical annulus is numerically analyzed for a Boussinesq fluid of low Prandtl number σ=0.025. For a fixed value of the radius ratio, η=0.3,
Three-dimensional simulations of hydrodynamic instability in liquid bridges: Influence of temperature-dependent viscosity
The development of thermocapillary convection inside a cylindrical liquid bridge is investigated by using a direct numerical simulation of the three-dimensional (3D), time-dependent problem for a
Three-dimensional numerical simulation of thermocapillary flows in cylindrical liquid bridges
The dynamics of thermocapillary flows in differentially heated cylindrical liquid bridges is investigated numerically using a mixed finite volume/pseudo-spectral method to solve the Navier–Stokes

By modeling the flow with a stream function, it is shown how to construct and identify invariant structures in the flow that act as a ‘‘template’’ for the motion of fluid particles, in the absence of molecular diffusivity.
Temporal and spatial elements of thermocapillary convection in floating zones
Abstract We investigated experimentally spatio-temporal convective flow phenomena in cylindrical liquid bridges [floating-(half-)zones] of liquids with different Prandtl-numbers (NaNO3?Pr=7;
Three‐dimensional numerical simulation of Marangoni instabilities in liquid bridges: influence of geometrical aspect ratio
Oscillatory Marangoni convection in silicone oil–liquid bridges with different geometrical aspect ratios is investigated by three‐dimensional and time‐dependent numerical simulations, based on

Using automated laser-Doppler methods we have identified four distinct sequences of instabilities leading to turbulent convection at low Prandtl number (2·5–5·0), in fluid layers of small horizontal
Instability of thermocapillary convection in liquid bridges
It is well known that thermocapillary convection arises in liquid bridges when the support discs are heated differentially and uniformly. Upon increasing the temperature difference, the convective
Oscillatory and chaotic thermocapillary convection in a half-zone liquid bridge
Thermocapillary-driven convection in a half-zone liquid bridge was investigated experimentally. The induced flows were categorized into several regimes mainly through the pattern of the suspended
