We present a new high-resolution N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of an encounter of two gas-rich disk galaxies that closely matches the morphology and kinematics of the interacting Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/39). The simulation includes radiative cooling, star formation, and feedback from Type II supernovae. The large-scale morphology and kinematics are determined by the internal structure and the orbit of the progenitor disks. The properties of the central region, in…

A parsec-resolution simulation of the Antennae galaxies: formation of star clusters during the merger
We present a hydrodynamical simulation of an Antennae-like galaxy merger at parsec resolution, including a multi-component model for stellar feedback and reaching numerical convergence in the global
Simulating magnetic fields in the Antennae galaxies
We present self-consistent high-resolution simulations of NGC 4038/4039 (the "Antennae galaxies") including star formation, supernova feedback, and magnetic fields performed with the N-body/smoothed
From large scale gas compression to cluster formation in the Antennae overlap region
We present a detailed observational analysis of how merger-driven turbulence may regulate the star-formation efficiency during galaxy interactions and set the initial conditions for the formation of
The fate of the Antennae galaxies
We present a high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) and follow the evolution $3$ Gyrs beyond the final coalescence. The simulation
NGC 6240: merger-induced star formation and gas dynamics
We present spatially resolved integral field spectroscopic K-band data at a resolution of 0.13 (60 pc) and interferometric CO(2–1) line observations of the prototypical merging system NGC 6240.
Constrained simulations of the Antennae galaxies: comparison with Herschel-PACS observations
We present a set of hydro-dynamical numerical simulations of the Antennae galaxies in order to understand the origin of the central overlap starburst. Our dynamical model provides a good match to the
Spatially resolved star formation and fuelling in galaxy interactions
We investigate the spatial structure and evolution of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in interacting galaxies. We use an extensive suite of parsec-scale galaxy merger simulations
On the Origin of Diffuse Ionized Gas in the Antennae Galaxy
The "Antennae Galaxy" (NGC 4038/39) is the closest major interacting galaxy system and therefore often taken as merger prototype. We present the first comprehensive integral field spectroscopic
Galactic ménage à trois: simulating magnetic fields in colliding galaxies
We present high resolution simulations of a multiple merger of three disk galaxies including the evolution of magnetic fields performed with the N-body/SPH code Gadget. For the first time, we embed
Mapping galaxy encounters in numerical simulations: the spatial extent of induced star formation
We employ a suite of 75 simulations of galaxies in idealized major mergers (stellar mass ratio ∼2.5:1), with a wide range of orbital parameters, to investigate the spatial extent of

Towards an accurate model for the Antennae galaxies
In the framework of hierarchical structure formation ellipticals can form from merging of smaller disk galaxies. The nearby interacting ‘Antennae’ galaxy pair (NGC 4038/39) is one of the best-studied
Cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations: a hybrid multiphase model for star formation
We present a model for star formation and supernova feedback that describes the multiphase structure of star-forming gas on scales that are typically not resolved in cosmological simulations. Our
We present optical spectroscopy of 16 star clusters in the merging galaxies NGC 4038/39 ('the Antennae') and supplement this data set with Hubble Space Telescope imaging. The age and metallicity of
A Multiwavelength Study of the Young Star Clusters and Interstellar Medium in the Antennae Galaxies
We report on a multiwavelength study of the relationship between young star clusters in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/9) and their interstellar environment, with the goal of understanding the
The effect of galaxy mass ratio on merger-driven starbursts
We employ numerical simulations of galaxy mergers to explore the effect of galaxy mass ratio on merger-driven starbursts. Our numerical simulations include radiative cooling of gas, star formation,
Modelling star formation and feedback in simulations of interacting galaxies
ABSTRA C T We discuss a heuristic model to implement star formation and feedback in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. In this model, gas is allowed to cool radiatively and
The age distribution of massive star clusters in the antennae galaxies
We determine the age distribution of star clusters in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/9) for two mass-limited samples (M > 3 × 104 M☉ and M > 2 × 105 M☉). This is based on integrated broadband UBVI
Gasdynamics and starbursts in major mergers
Using numerical simulation, we study the development of gaseous inflows and triggering of starburst activity in mergers of comparable-mass disk galaxies. In all encounters studied, the galaxies
UV Morphology and Star Formation in the Tidal Tails of NGC 4038/39 ('The Antennae')
We present Galaxy Evolution Explorer far-ultraviolet (1530 A) and near-ultraviolet (2310 A) observations of the archetypal merging system NGC 4038/39, "the Antennae." Both tails are relatively bright
Encounters of disk/halo galaxies
The first numerical models of interacting galaxies are presented in which all dynamical components of the participants are modeled as fully three-dimensional N-body systems with thousands of
