The unsteady, lineal translation of a solid spherical particle through viscoelastic fluids described by the Johnson-Segalman and Giesekus models is studied analytically. Solutions for the pressure and velocity fields as well as the force on the particle are expanded as a power series in the Weissenberg number. The momentum balance and constitutive equation are solved asymptotically for a steadily translating particle up to second order in the particle velocity, and rescaling of the pressure and… Expand

Steady sphere translation in a viscoelastic fluid with slip on the surface of the sphere
Abstract We study analytically the effect of Navier type slip on the surface of a spherical particle which translates with constant velocity U in a viscoelastic ambient fluid. We assume steady state,Expand

Abstract The steady, creeping and isothermal sedimentation of a rigid sphere in an incompressible viscoelastic fluid which follows the exponential Phan–Thien and Tanner constitutive equation isExpand
Perturbation solution for the viscoelastic 3D flow around a rigid sphere subject to simple shear
We study the steady, three-dimensional creeping, and viscoelastic flow around a freely rotating rigid sphere subject to simple shear flow imposed at infinity. The viscoelasticity of the ambient fluidExpand
Perturbation solution for the viscoelastic flow around a rigid sphere under pure uniaxial elongation
Abstract We study the steady, three-dimensional creeping and viscoelastic flow around a rigid sphere subject to steady uniaxial extensional flow imposed at infinity. The viscoelastic response of theExpand
The time-dependent flow of a viscoelastic fluid around a sphere
We apply the finite element method to calculate the time-dependent velocity of a sphere falling along the axis of a circular cylinder filled with a viscoelastic fluid. The mesh surrounding the sphereExpand
A weak-coupling expansion for viscoelastic fluids applied to dynamic settling of a body
The flow of viscoelastic fluids is an area in which analytical results are difficult to attain, yet can provide invaluable information. We develop a weak-coupling expansion that allows forExpand
The unsteady motion of a sphere in a viscoelastic fluid
The motion of a sphere accelerating from rest along the center line of a cylindrical tube filled with a polyisobutylene (PIB) Boger fluid is examined both experimentally, using a digital imagingExpand
SEDIMENTATION OF A SPHERE NEAR A PLANE WALL: WEAK NON-NEWTONIAN AND INERTIAL EFFECTS
Abstract A reciprocal theorem is used to predict the steady three-dimensional creeping motion of a sphere sedimenting near a single vertical plane wall. Weak non-Newtonian effects up to second orderExpand
The angular velocity of a freely rotating sphere in a weakly viscoelastic matrix fluid
This letter reports on the angular velocity of a freely rotating rigid sphere in a weakly viscoelastic matrix fluid subject to simple shear flow imposed at infinity. The three-dimensional creepingExpand
Creeping flow of dilute polymer solutions past cylinders and spheres
Abstract A dilute polymer solution is modelled as a suspension of dumbbells with finite extensibility. Time-dependent numerical calculations are performed of flow part cylindrical and sphericalExpand
