The metal explosion technique can be used to synthesize a number of rhenium fluorides, including several that have not been reported previously. Under certain reaction conditions, one can obtain mixtures of the volatile fluorides ReF7 and ReF6. Under other conditions, one can prepare ReF7 free of ReF6. These volatile fluorides are products of Re-SF6 reactions. They are accompanied by the formation of non-volatile rhenium fluoride films, which are soluble in aqueous NaOH solutions.
