Oligomers of (R)-3-hydroxybutanoic acid (OHBs) consisting of 8, 16, and 32 HB units have been investigated by CD spectroscopy in solution and in a racemic phospholipid bilayer. A Freudenberg plot (ϑ/n vs (n − 2)/n) of the data obtained in solution can be interpreted as an indication for the presence of a chiral secondary structure of the oligoester chainon the very short time scale of UV spectroscopy! The OHBs were also combined with fluorescent groups, including donor/acceptor pairs (coumarin…
On the Structure of PHB (=Poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutanoic Acid]) in Phospholipid Bilayers: Preparation of Trifluoromethyl‐Labeled Oligo[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutanoic Acid] Derivatives
TLDR
The synthesis of the specifically F-labeled HB oligomers II–IV for structural investigation by means of solid-state 19F-NMR spectroscopic techniques is described.
Synthesis and NMR Analysis in Solution of Oligo(3‐hydroxyalkanoic acid) Derivatives with the Side Chains of Alanine, Valine, and Leucine (β‐Depsides): Coming Full Circle from PHB to β‐Peptides to PHB
TLDR
The extremely high flexibility (averaged or ‘random-coil' conformation) of the polyester chain (CO−O rotational barrier ca. 13 kcal/mol; no hydrogen bonding) has been demonstrated once again.
The Role of Short-Chain Conjugated Poly-(R)-3-Hydroxybutyrate (cPHB) in Protein Folding

TLDR
The physical properties of cPHB indicate it plays important roles in the targeting and folding of c PHB-proteins, and its influence on the folding and structure of outer membrane protein A of Escherichia coli is discussed.
Importance of oligo-R-3-hydroxybutyrates to S. lividans KcsA channel structure and function.
In the polyphosphate model of the Streptomyces lividans potassium channel KcsA, four polypeptides, each covalently modified by oligo-(R)-3-hydroxybutyrates (cOHB), surround a core molecule of
Oligo-(R)-3-Hydroxybutyrate Modification of Sorting Signal Enables Pore Formation by E. coli OmpA
TLDR
Results indicate that modification of serines in the sorting signal of OmpA by cOHB in the cytoplasm enables OMPA to incorporate into lipid bilayers at room temperature as a narrow pore, and suggests that c OHB modification may be an important factor in protein targeting and protein folding.
A Post‐Modification Strategy for the Synthesis of Uniform, Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Patterned α‐Hydroxy Acid Oligomers
TLDR
The proposed synthetic strategy provides an interesting alternative to rapidly generate libraries of foldamers with identical chain length and monomer sequence but different side-chain functionalities.
Physiological Importance of Poly‐(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrates
TLDR
The low concentrations, lack of unusual atoms or functional groups, and flexible backbones of this complexed PHB, referred to as cPHB, make them invisible to many analytical procedures; whereas other physical properties make them requisite participants in vital physiological processes as well as contributors to the development of certain diseases.
