The stability of vortex rings is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis considers the stability of the vortex-filament ring of small but finite core size in an inviscid fluid to small sinusoidal displacements of its centreline. The effect of the vorticity distribution within the finite vortex core on the self-induced motion of each element of the vortex filament is calculated on the basis of the results presented previously by Widnall, Bliss & Zalay (1970… Expand

A theoretical investigation of the instability of a vortex ring to short azimuthal bending waves is presented. The theory considers only the stability of a thin vortex ring with a core of constantExpand
REVIEWS OF TOPICAL PROBLEMS: Vortex ring oscillations, the development of turbulence in vortex rings and generation of sound
The state of the art in describing the eigen-oscillations of a vortex ring in an ideal incompressible fluid is reviewed. To describe eigen-oscillations, the displacement field is taken as the basicExpand
Experimental study of the instability of vortex rings
The results of a series of experiments performed to study the development of instabilities in vortex rings are presented. The experiments were performed in water. The vortex rings are generated byExpand
The evolution of an elliptic vortex ring
The evolution of a vortex ring in an ideal fluid under self-induction from a flat and elliptic configuration is followed numerically using the cut-off approximation (Crow 1970) for the velocity atExpand
The linear stability of swirling vortex rings
The stability of vortex rings with an azimuthal component of velocity is investigated numerically for various combinations of ring wavenumber and swirl magnitude. The vortex rings are equilibratedExpand
Dynamics and Instability of a Vortex Ring Impinging on a Wall
Dynamics and instability of a vortex ring impinging on a wall were investigated by means of large eddy simulation for two vortex core thicknesses corresponding to thin and thick vortex rings. VariousExpand
Numerical stability analysis of a vortex ring with swirl
The linear instability of a vortex ring with swirl with Gaussian distributions of azimuthal vorticity and velocity in its core is studied by direct numerical simulation. The numerical study isExpand
The interaction of the piston vortex with a piston-generated vortex ring
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the effects of a piston vortex on the vorticity evolution of a vortex ring. The rings are produced by the roll-up of a shear layerExpand
Dynamics and stability of a vortex ring impacting a solid boundary
Direct numerical simulations were used to study the dynamics of a vortex ring impacting a wall at normal incidence. The boundary layer formed as the ring approaches the wall undergoes separation andExpand
Numerical Study of the Instability and Flow Transition in a Vortex-Ring/Wall Interaction
Instability and fl w transition of a vortex ring impinging on a wall were investigated by means of large-eddy simulation for two vortex core thicknesses corresponding to thin and thick vortex rings.Expand

The stability of a helical vortex filament of finite core and infinite extent to small sinusoidal displacements of its centre-line is considered. The influence of the entire perturbed filament on theExpand
Motion and Decay of a Vortex Ring
In the classical inviscid theory of a vortex ring, the velocity at a point near the vortex ring becomes singular due to terms of r−1 and ln r where r is the shortest distance from the point to theExpand
The structure and stability of vortex rings
A series of observations on experimentally produced vortex rings is described. The flow field, ring velocity and growth rate were observed using dye and hydrogen-bubble techniques. It was found thatExpand

The motion of vortex rings of small cross section is considered. A formula is given for the velocity of a ring in an ideal fluid with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity in the core and anExpand
A new theoretical model for the laser Dopplermeter
The operation of a laser Dopplermeter has been generally described in terms of the Doppler effect. An alternative model is proposed which gives a more complete description of the performance of theExpand
