The stability of the closed magnetosphere is studied for the case in which the interplanetary field opposes the terrestrial field in the equatorial plane. In the limit of a vanishing solar wind, the closed equilibrium configuration, consisting of a spherical geomagnetic cavity surrounded by a field-reversing current layer, is shown to be unstable.
