We derive an analytic expression for the instrument profile of a slit spectrograph, also known as the line spread function. While this problem is not new, our treatment relies on the operatorial approach to the description of diffractive optical systems, which provides a general framework for the analysis of the performance of slit spectrographs under different illumination conditions. Based on our results, we propose an approximation to the spectral resolution of slit spectrographs, taking…

Spectroscope Slit Images in Partially Coherent Light

The apparatus function of prism or grating spectroscopes with finite slits is derived for the general case of partially coherent illumination of the slit. Numerical results are presented for the

A new spectro-polarimeter for solar prominence and filament magnetic field measurements

We are constructing a spectro-polarimeter using the 40-cm coronagraph at the Evans Solar Facility of the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, NM for the purpose of measuring the vector magnetic

Introduction to Fourier optics

The second edition of this respected text considerably expands the original and reflects the tremendous advances made in the discipline since 1968. All material has been thoroughly updated and

Fourier optics described by operator algebra

Fresnel diffraction is described by replacing the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral, the lens transfer factor, and other operations by operators. The resulting operator algebra leads to the description of
