A bstractWe analyse the dynamics of near-extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically four-dimensional Anti de Sitter space (AdS4). We work in the spherically symmetric approximation and study the thermodynamics and the response to a probe scalar field. We find that the behaviour of the system, at low energies and to leading order in our approximations, is well described by the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model of gravity. In fact, this behaviour can be understood from symmetry… Expand

Near-extremal black holes at late times, backreacted
A bstractBlack holes display universal behavior near extremality. One such feature is the late-time blowup of derivatives of linearized perturbations across the horizon. For generic initial data,Expand
5D rotating black holes and the nAdS2/nCFT1 correspondence

Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and rotating black holes
Abstract We show that the free energy at low temperatures for near-extremal black holes is correctly obtained from the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model of gravity. Our arguments apply to all blackExpand
Eigenstate thermalisation in the conformal Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model: an analytic approach
Abstract The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model provides an uncommon example of a chaotic theory that can be analysed analytically. In the deep infrared limit, the original model has an emergentExpand

On 2D gauge theories in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity
The low-energy behavior of near-extremal black holes can be understood from the near-horizon AdS_2 region. In turn, this region is effectively described by using Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled toExpand

Two dimensional nearly de Sitter gravity
We study some aspects of the de Sitter version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. Though we do not have propagating gravitons, we have a boundary mode when we compute observables with a fixed dilaton andExpand
A violation of global symmetries from replica wormholes and the fate of black hole remnants
We show that the presence of replica wormholes in the Euclidean path integral of gravity leads to a non-perturbative violation of charge conservation for any global symmetry present in the low-energyExpand
Supersymmetric indices factorize
The extent to which quantum mechanical features of black holes can be understood from the Euclidean gravity path integral has recently received significant attention. In this paper, we examine thisExpand

Conformal symmetry breaking and thermodynamics of near-extremal black holes
A bstractIt has been argued recently by Almheiri and Polchinski that the near-horizon conformal symmetry of extremal black holes must be broken due to gravitational backreaction at an IR scale linearExpand

Conformal symmetry and its breaking in two dimensional Nearly Anti-de-Sitter space
We study a two dimensional dilaton gravity system, recently examined by Almheiri and Polchinski, which describes near extremal black holes, or more generally, nearly $AdS_2$ spacetimes. TheExpand
Three dimensional view of the SYK/AdS duality
A bstractWe show that the spectrum of the SYK model can be interpreted as that of a 3D scalar coupled to gravity. The scalar has a mass which is at the Breitenholer-Freedman bound of AdS2, andExpand
