Abstract Particles are a widespread tool for obtaining information from fluid flows. When Eulerian data are unavailable, they may be employed to estimate flow fields or to identify coherent flow structures. Here we numerically examine the possibility of using particles to capture the dynamics of isolated vortex rings propagating in a quiescent fluid. The analysis is performed starting from numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes and the Hall–Vinen–Bekarevich–Khalatnikov equations… Expand

An experimental study of turbulent vortex rings in superfluid 4He
Macroscopic vortex rings are generated thermally in superfluid 4He, between 1.28 and 1.95 K, by applying a brief voltage pulse to a resistive heater located below a circular vertical tube 5 mm inExpand
Turbulent vortex rings
We consider the motion of the mass of fluid ejected through a sharp-edged orifice by the motion of a piston. The vorticity formed by viscous forces within the separated flow at the sharp edge rollsExpand
Particles-Vortex Interactions and Flow Visualization in 4He
Recent experiments have demonstrated a remarkable progress in implementing and use of the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking techniques for the study of turbulence in 4He.Expand
A universal time scale for vortex ring formation
The formation of vortex rings generated through impulsively started jets is studied experimentally. Utilizing a piston/cylinder arrangement in a water tank, the velocity and vorticity fields ofExpand
Inhomogeneous distribution of particles in coflow and counterflow quantum turbulence
Particles are today the main tool to study superfluid turbulence and visualize quantum vortices. In this work, we study the dynamics and the spatial distribution of particles in co-flow andExpand
Ubiquity of particle–vortex interactions in turbulent counterflow of superfluid helium
Abstract Thermal counterflow of superfluid $^4$He is investigated experimentally, by employing the particle tracking velocimetry technique. A flat heater, located at the bottom of a vertical channelExpand
Flows of liquid 4He due to oscillating grids
We investigate cryogenic flows of liquid 4He between two grids oscillating in phase, at temperatures ranging from approximately 1.3 to 2.5 K, resulting in suitably defined Reynolds numbers up toExpand
Energy Spectra of Developed Turbulence in Helium Superfluids
We suggest a “minimal model” for the 3D turbulent energy spectra in superfluids, based on their two-fluid description. We start from the Navier–Stokes equation for the normal fluid and from theExpand
An experimental study of turbulent vortex rings during their early development
In this paper, the early development of turbulent vortex rings at two Reynolds numbers is studied using two-dimensional and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV). In the late 1980s, aExpand
The formation of vortex rings
Vortex rings are usually formed by a brief discharge of fluid from an orifice. In previous investigations, the geometry of the vortex generator has varied greatly from one experiment to another, withExpand
