The critical brain hypothesis has emerged as an attractive framework to understand the functional implications of the variability in brain activity. However, the mechanisms behind the observed emergent collective neural patterns remain unclear. Here we propose a modeling framework to reconcile apparent contrasting results. We show that the presence of scale-free neuronal avalanches and the associated crackling-noise relation can be explained by the presence of an extrinsic, stochasticinduced…

Beyond resting state neuronal avalanches in the somatosensory barrel cortex
TLDR
It is shown that neuronal avalanches are power law distributed for both spikes and local field potentials during spontaneous activity, with exponents that are spread along a scaling line in a maximum likelihood statistical method based on timeseries undersampling to fit the avalanches distributions.
Neuronal Avalanches Across the Rat Somatosensory Barrel Cortex and the Effect of Single Whisker Stimulation
TLDR
This work investigates whether a single barrel column of the somatosensory cortex of the anesthetized rat displays a critical behavior and shows that neuronal avalanches are power law distributed for both multi-unit activities and local field potentials during spontaneous activity.
Box scaling as a proxy of finite size correlations
TLDR
Finite-size scaling can be approximated in an experimental system of fixed and relatively small extent, by computing correlations inside of a reduced field of view of various widths (referred to as “box-scaling”).
Mutual Information Disentangles Interactions from Changing Environments
TLDR
This work introduces a paradigmatic interacting model in a switching, but unobserved, environment and shows that the limiting properties of the mutual information of the system allow for a disentangling of these two sources of couplings.
Critical behaviour at the onset of synchronization in a neuronal model
The presence of both critical behavior and oscillating patterns in brain dynamics is a very interesting issue. In this paper, we consider a model for a neuron population, where each neuron is modeled

Brain organization into resting state networks emerges at criticality on a model of the human connectome.
TLDR
The results show that critical dynamics unfolding on the structural connectivity of the human brain allow the recovery of many key experimental findings obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging, such as divergence of the correlation length, the anomalous scaling of correlation fluctuations, and the emergence of large-scale resting state networks.
Being Critical of Criticality in the Brain
TLDR
The concept of criticality is explained and substantial objections to the criticality hypothesis raised by skeptics are reviewed, and counter points are presented in dialog form.
Self-organized criticality as a fundamental property of neural systems
TLDR
An account of the mathematical and physical foundations of criticality is provided and recent experimental studies are reviewed with the aim of identifying important next steps to be taken and connections to other fields that should be explored.

TLDR
An introductory-level thought experiment is described to provide the reader with an intuitive understanding of criticality and quantitative evidence that three functional properties of the cortex are optimized at criticality is reviewed.
Estimation of Directed Effective Connectivity from fMRI Functional Connectivity Hints at Asymmetries of Cortical Connectome
TLDR
A Lyapunov optimization is developed that iteratively tunes the network connectivity in order to reproduce second-order moments of the node activity, or functional connectivity, and finds that the cortical interactions, referred to as effective connectivity, in the tuned model are not reciprocal.
Whole-Brain Neuronal Activity Displays Crackling Noise Dynamics
TLDR
It is shown that gap junctions contribute to the maintenance of criticality and that, during interactions with the environment, the system is transiently displaced to a more ordered regime, conceivably to limit the potential sensory representations and motor outcomes.
On How Network Architecture Determines the Dominant Patterns of Spontaneous Neural Activity
TLDR
Using a general mathematical model of neural dynamics, this work shows mathematically how the synaptic connections between neurons determine the repertoire of spatial patterns displayed in the spontaneous activity and suggests new ways of investigating encoding and storage capabilities of neural networks.
What kind of noise is brain noise: anomalous scaling behavior of the resting brain activity fluctuations
TLDR
Three statistical features which clearly differentiate brain data from naive expectations for random processes are uncovered, and are relevant for the interpretation of the role of fluctuations and variability in brain function in health and disease.
Higher-Order Interactions Characterized in Cortical Activity
TLDR
It is shown that higher-order interactions are required to properly account for cortical dynamics such as ongoing neuronal avalanches in the alert monkey and evoked visual responses in the anesthetized cat and suggests a simple solution to overcome the apparent formidable complexity previously thought to be intrinsic to those interactions.
