Multigrid algorithms and conjugate gradient methods with appropriate preconditioning are both efficient tools for the solution of equations which arise from the discretization of partial differential equations. Sometimes it is favourable to combine both methods. We will discuss two typical examples which elucidate different reasons for the combination of both methods. I.
