On the black hole/string transition

  title={On the black hole/string transition},
author={Yiming Chen and Juan Martin Maldacena and Edward Witten},
We discuss aspects of the possible transition between small black holes and highly excited fundamental strings. We focus on the connection between black holes and the self gravitating string solution of Horowitz and Polchinski. This solution is interesting because it has non-zero entropy at the classical level and it is natural to suspect that it might be continuously connected to the black hole. Surprisingly, we find a different behavior for heterotic and type II cases. For the type II case we… Expand
Black Hole-String Correspondence
I was asked to give a brief review of the black hole-string correspondence [1] as a warm-up for a longer SITP-group discussion of a recent paper by Chen, Maldacena, and Witten [2]. Here are my notesExpand

How Does a Fundamental String Stretch its Horizon ?
It has recently been shown that if we take into account a class of higher derivative corrections to the effective action of heterotic string theory, the entropy of the black hole solutionExpand
Correspondence principle for black holes and strings
For most black holes in string theory, the Schwarzschild radius in string units decreases as the string coupling is reduced. We formulate a correspondence principle, which states that (i) when theExpand
Black hole solutions in heterotic string theory on a torus
We construct the general electrically charged, rotating black hole solution in the heterotic string theory compactified on a six-dimensional torus and study its classical properties. This black holeExpand
Some of the extremal black hole solutions in string theory have the same quantum numbers as the Bogomol’nyi saturated elementary string states. We explore the possibility that these black holes canExpand
On free energy of 2-D black hole in bosonic string theory
Trying to interpret recent matrix model results (hep-th/0101011) we discuss computation of classical free energy of exact dilatonic 2-d black hole from the effective action of string theory. TheExpand
The Dark Side of String Theory: Black Holes and Black Strings
Solutions to low energy string theory describing black holes and black strings are reviewed. Many of these solutions can be obtained by applying simple solution generating transformations to theExpand
Self-Gravitating Strings and String/Black Hole Correspondence
In a recent essay, we discussed the possibility of using polymer sizing to model the collapse of a single, long excited string to a black hole. In this letter, we apply this idea to bring furtherExpand
Hagedorn String Thermodynamics in Curved Spacetimes and near Black Hole Horizons
This thesis concerns the study of high-temperature string theory on curved backgrounds, generalizing the notions of Hagedorn temperature and thermal scalar to general backgrounds. Chapter 2 containsExpand
Black hole attractors and the topological string
A simple relationship of the form ZBH = |Ztop|2 is conjectured, where ZBH is a supersymmetric partition function for a four-dimensional BPS black hole in a Calabi-Yau compactification of Type IIExpand
Solution-generating transformations and the string effective action
We study exhaustively the solution-generating transformations (dualities) that occur in the context of the low-energy effective action of superstring theory. We first consider target-space duality ('Expand
