We illuminate dynamical properties of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) in the 3 : 2 (Plutino) and 2 : 1 ("Twotino") Neptunian resonances within the model of resonant capture and migration. We analyze a series of numerical integrations, each involving the four migratory giant planets and 400 test particles distributed throughout trans-Neptunian space, to measure the efficiencies of capture into the 3 : 2 and 2 : 1 resonances, the efficiencies of capture into Kozai-type secular resonances, and the…
Neptune's 5:2 Resonance in the Kuiper Belt
Observations of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) in Neptune's 5:2 resonance present two puzzles: this third order resonance hosts a surprisingly large population, comparable to the prominent populations of
CHAOTIC DIFFUSION OF RESONANT KUIPER BELT OBJECTS
We carried out extensive numerical orbit integrations to probe the long-term chaotic dynamics of the two strongest mean-motion resonances of Neptune in the Kuiper Belt, the 3:2 (Plutinos) and 2:1
Formation of the Resonant Populations in the Kuiper Belt
Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) have most of their orbits within a thick disk outside that of Neptune as they are located around heliocentric distances in the range 35-50 AU. On the basis of their orbital
Neptune's Orbital Migration Was Grainy, Not Smooth
The Kuiper belt is a population of icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. The complex orbital structure of the Kuiper belt, including several categories of objects inside and outside of resonances
Resonant and Secular Families of the Kuiper Belt
We review ongoing efforts to identify occupants of mean-motion resonances(MMRs) and collisional families in the Edgeworth–Kuiper belt. Directintegrations of trajectories of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs)
A study of the high-inclination population in the Kuiper belt – I. The Plutinos
The dynamics of the high-inclination Plutinos is systematically studied. We first present the peculiar features of the 2:3 Neptune mean motion resonance (NMMR) for inclined orbits, especially for the
Resonance occupation in the Kuiper belt: Case examples of the 5:2 and Trojan resonances
As part of our ongoing Deep Ecliptic Survey (DES) of the Kuiper belt, we report on the occupation of the 1 : 1 (Trojan), 4 : 3, 3 : 2, 7 : 4, 2 : 1, and 5 : 2 Neptunian mean motion resonances (MMRs).
PLUTINO DETECTION BIASES, INCLUDING THE KOZAI RESONANCE
Because of their relative proximity within the trans-Neptunian region, the plutinos (objects in the 3:2 mean-motion resonance with Neptune) are numerous in flux-limited catalogs, and well-studied
The Structure of the Distant Kuiper Belt in a Nice Model Scenario
This work explores the orbital distribution of minor bodies in the outer Solar System emplaced as a result of a Nice model migration from the simulations of Brasser & Morbidelli (2013). This

The Resonant Structure of the Kuiper Belt and the Dynamics of the First Five Trans-Neptunian Objects
Abstract By means of simple analytic models and numerical integrations, we explore the resonant structure of the Kuiper belt. We find that the inner order-one mean motion resonances with Neptune are
Close Approaches of Trans-Neptunian Objects to Pluto Have Left Observable Signatures on Their Orbital Distribution
It is shown that in addition to four outer planets (Jupiter to Neptune) Pluto should be also taken into account in studies of the orbital dynamics in the trans-Neptunian region. Pluto's effect is
Possible Origin and Early Dynamical Evolution of the Pluto-Charon Binary
Abstract The dynamical state of the Pluto-Charon binary is distinctive in several respects including its well-known position in the Neptune 3:2 mean motion resonance, its librating argument of
Orbital Migration of Neptune and Orbital Distribution of Trans-Neptunian Objects
A large number of trans-Neptunian objects are found to have orbits that are commensurate with the 3:2 mean-motion resonance of Neptunes orbit. These objects were probably captured into this resonant
The Phase Space Structure Near Neptune Resonances in the Kuiper Belt
The Solar system beyond Neptune is believed to house a population of small primordial bodies left over from the planet formation process. The region up to heliocentric distance -50 AU (a.k.a. the
Chaotic Diffusion and the Origin of Comets from the 2/3 Resonance in the Kuiper Belt
Abstract The dynamical structure of the 2/3 resonance at small inclination is explored using numerical integrations of test particles to compute the evolution of proper elements with time. The basic
Migration Timescale Thresholds for Resonant Capture in the Plutino Problem
Dynamic autoresonance theory is applied to the problem of thresholds on migration timescales for capture into resonances in the planar-restricted three-body problem with m1 m2 m0 and slowly migrating
The origin of Pluto's orbit: implications for the
The origin of the highly eccentric, inclined, and resonance-locked orbit of Pluto has long been a puzzle. A possible explanation has been proposed recently which suggests that these extraordinary
Large Kuiper Belt Objects: The Mauna Kea 8K CCD Survey
We describe a large-area ecliptic survey designed to assess the sky-plane surface density of bright Kuiper Belt objects. We used an 8192 ) 8192 pixel CCD mosaic to image 51.5 deg2 to a 50% detection
