I will review the basic properties of S0 galaxies in the local Universe in relation to both elliptical and spiral galaxies, their neighbours on the Hubble sequence, and also in relation to dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. This will include colours, luminosities, spectral features, information about the age and metallicity composition of their stellar populations and globular clusters, about their ISM content, as well as kinematic signatures and their implications for central black hole masses…

Star Formation Within Nearby Galaxies
Galaxies, like the Milky Way in which we live, grow by merging with other galaxies and forming new stars. Star formation is fuelled by the cooling and collapse of clouds of gas, and this thesis aims
Lenticular Galaxy Formation: Possible Luminosity Dependence
We investigate the correlation between the bulge effective radius (re) and disk scale length (rd) in the near-infrared K band for lenticular galaxies in the field and in clusters. We find markedly
The SAURON project – IX. A kinematic classification for early‐type galaxies
Two-dimensional stellar kinematics of 48 representative elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies obtained with the SAURON integral-field spectrograph reveal that early-type galaxies appear in two
Color bimodality: Implications for galaxy evolution
We use a sample of 69726 galaxies from the SDSS to study the variation of the bimodal color‐magnitude (CM) distribution with environment. Dividing the galaxy population by environment (Σ5) and

The External Origin of the Gas in S0 Galaxies
In this Letter we present three new cases of S0 galaxies, namely NGC 2768, NGC 4379, and IC 4889, out of a sample of 15, in which the gas is counterrotating or strongly kinematically decoupled with
Ages of S0 and Elliptical Galaxies in the Coma Cluster
The ages of stellar populations in 52 elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Coma Cluster are investigated, using a new spectroscopic sample. More than 40% of the S0ˇs are found to have undergone star
Ages of the disks of S0 galaxies
A photometric system using a broad-band color combined with a line strength index is employed to distinguish age differences from metallicity differences between the bulges and disks of S0 galaxies.
The Universality of the Fundamental Plane of E and S0 Galaxies:Spectroscopic Data*
We present central velocity dispersion measurements for 325 early-type galaxies in eight clusters and groups of galaxies, including new observations for 212 galaxies. The clusters and groups are the
Evolutionary synthesis models for the formation of S0 galaxies in clusters
Rich galaxy clusters in the local Universe show a large population of S0 galaxies (40% of all luminous galaxies). With increasing redshift the fraction of this S0 galaxy population is observed to
The evolution of disk galaxies and the origin of S0 galaxies
We reconsider the relation between spiral and SO galaxies in the light of recent data on the colors and morphology of disk systems, and on the content of clusters at different redshifts. Star
Tidal dwarf candidates in a sample of interacting galaxies
We present deep opticalB,V,R images of a sample of 10 interacting systems which were selected for their resem- blance to disturbed galaxies at high redshift. Photometry is per- formed on knots in the
A Catalog of morphological types in 10 distant rich clusters of galaxies
We present catalogs of objects detected in deep images of 11 fields in 10 distant clusters obtained using WFPC-2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The clusters span the redshift range z =
A Comparison of Coma Cluster S0 Galaxies with the Tully-Fisher Relation for Late-Type Spirals
We present I-band photometry for 13 S0 galaxies in the Coma Cluster and estimate their circular velocities based on stellar kinematics derived from stellar absorption-line spectroscopy. We find that
On the Assembly History of Early-Type Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North
We present deep Keck spectroscopy for a sample of I =0.88. However, we find enhanced H delta absorption of equivalent width 4.0 Angstrom in the mean spectrum of the ten galaxies, indicating the
