We study theoretically how the initial cosmological conditions establish the dependence of galaxy properties on the environment. First we adopt the linear tidal torque theory, according to which the angular momentum of a protogalaxy is generated to first order by the misalignment between the protogalaxy's inertia tensor and the local tidal tensor. Then we quantify analytically the degree of misalignment between the two tensors and show quantitatively that it increases as the density of the…

A New Perspective on the Large-scale Tidal Effect on the Galaxy Luminosity and Morphology
We study the mean tidal coherence of galaxy environments as a function of intrinsic luminosity determined by the absolute $r$-band magnitude. The tidal coherence of a galaxy environment is estimated
Galactic angular momenta and angular momentum couplings in the large-scale structure
In this paper, we revisit the acquisition of angular momentum of galaxies by tidal shearing and compute the angular momentum variance as well as the angular momentum correlation function CL(r), using
Rotation of cosmic voids and void spin statistics
We present a theoretical study of void spins and their correlation properties. The concept of the spin angular momentum for an unbound void is introduced to quantify the effect of the tidal field on
The Anisotropic Two-Point Correlation Functions of the Nonlinear Traceless Tidal Field in the Principal-Axis Frame
Galaxies on the largest scales of the universe are observed to be embedded in the filamentary cosmic web, which is shaped by the nonlinear tidal field. As an efficient tool to quantitatively describe
An observational signal of the void shape correlation and its link to the cosmic web
The shapes of cosmic voids are prone to distortions by the external tidal forces since their low-densities imply a lower internal resistance. This susceptibility of the void shapes to the tidal
The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) allows for the first time a highly significant census of environments and structures up to redshift 1, as well as a full morphological description of the galaxy
Environmental influences on the morphology and dynamics of group-sized haloes
We use group-sized haloes, with masses in the range 10 13 < M < 2 × 10 14 h −1 M , identified with a 'friends of friends' (FOF) algorithm in a concordancecold dark matter ( CDM) GADGET2 (dark
Morphological evolution of galaxies over the last 8 billion years
In this chapter I describe the motivation behind this Thesis work. I briefly review the main theoretical aspects and the very broad observation al scenario, explaining the fundamental goals of this
The Caterpillar Project: A Large Suite of Milky Way Sized Halos
We present the largest number of Milky Way sized dark matter halos simulated at very high mass ($\sim$$10^4$ M$_\odot$/particle) and temporal resolution ($\sim$5 Myrs/snapshot) done to date,

The Environmental Dependence of Galaxy Properties in the Local Universe: Dependences on Luminosity, Local Density, and System Richness
We investigate the environmental dependence of star formation and the morphology of galaxies in the local universe based on a volume-limited sample constructed from the data of the Sloan Digital Sky
Tidal Torques and the Orientation of Nearby Disk Galaxies
We use numerical simulations to investigate the orientation of the angular momentum axis of disk galaxies relative to their surrounding large-scale structure. We find that this is closely related to
How filaments of galaxies are woven into the cosmic web
LARGE-SCALE structure in the distribution of galaxies is thought to have evolved through gravitational instabilities from small density fluctuations in the (largely homogeneous) early Universe. This
Testing tidal-torque theory – II. Alignment of inertia and shear and the characteristics of protohaloes
We investigate the cross-talk between the two key components of tidal-torque theory, the inertia (I) and shear (T) tensors, using a cosmological N-body simulation with thousands of well-resolved
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: The environmental dependence of galaxy star formation rates near clusters
We have measured the equivalent width of the Hα emission line for 11 006 galaxies brighter than M_b-=-−19 (Ω_Λ = 0.7, Ω_m = 0.3, H_0 = 70 km s^(−1) Mpc^(−1)) at 0.05 < z < 0.1 in the 2dF Galaxy
Detection of the Effect of Cosmological Large-Scale Structure on the Orientation of Galaxies
Galaxies are not distributed randomly throughout space but are instead arranged in an intricate cosmic web of filaments and walls surrounding bubble-like voids. There is still no compelling
The morphology-density relation - The group connection
The relationship between galaxy morphology and local density is derived from two complete galaxy redshift surveys. This relationship is completely consistent with the one derived by Dressler for a
Evolution of the Angular Momentum of Protogalaxies from Tidal Torques
The growth of the angular momentum L of protogalaxies induced by tidal torques is reconsidered within the Zel'dovich approximation. We obtain a general expression for the ensemble expectation value

It is expected that the galaxy spin axes are correlated with the intermediate principal axis of the gravitational shear tensor, which allows one to reconstruct the shear field and thereby the full gravitational potential from the observed galaxy spin fields.
Galaxy voids in cold dark matter universes
We present predictions for numerous statistics related to the presence of voids in the distribution of galaxies in a cold dark matter model of structure formation using a semi-analytic model of
