Due to the difficulties of finding superconformal Lagrangian theories for multiple M2-branes, we will in this paper instead focus on the field equations. By relaxing the requirement of a Lagrangian formulation we can explore the possibility of having structure constants fABCD satisfying the fundamental identity but which are not totally antisymmetric. We exemplify this discussion by making use of an explicit choice of a non-antisymmetric fABCD constructed from the Lie algebra structure…

M2-branes coupled to antisymmetric fluxes

By turning on antisymmetric background fluxes, we study how multiple M2-branes are coupled to them. Our investigation concentrates on the gauge invariance conditions for the Myers-Chern-Simons

Janus field theories from multiple M2 branes

Based on the recent proposal of N = 8 superconformal gauge theories of the multiple M2 branes, we derive (2 + 1)-dimensional supersymmetric Janus field theories with a space-time dependent coupling

Light-cone M5 and multiple M2-branes

We present the light-cone gauge fixed Lagrangian for the M5-brane; it has a residual ‘exotic’ gauge invariance with the group of 5-volume preserving diffeomorphisms, SDiff5, as gauge group. For an

Mass deformation of the multiple M2-branes theory

Based on recent developments, in this paper we study the one parameter deformation of 2+1-dimensional gauge theories with scale invariance and $\mathcal{N} = 8$ supersymmetry, which is expected to be

Multiple M2-branes and generalized 3-Lie algebras

We propose a generalization of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson action as a candidate for the description of an arbitrary number of M2-branes. The action is formulated in terms of N=2 superfields in

Lie 3-Algebra and Multiple M2-branes

Motivated by the recent proposal of an N = 8 supersymmetric action for multiple M2-branes, we study the Lie 3-algebra in detail. In particular, we focus on the fundamental identity and the relation

M5-brane in three-form flux and multiple M2-branes

We investigate the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model associated with the Nambu-Poisson algebra as a theory describing a single M5-brane. We argue that the model is a gauge theory associated with the

A note on interpreting N M2 branes

A new world volume theory with a free scalar field was proposed for Multiple M2 branes recently. By giving the free scalar a large VEV, we can obtain a gauge theory of multiple D2 branes with a

M2 to D2 revisited

We present two derivations of the multiple D2 action from the multiple M2-brane model proposed by Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson. The first one is to start from Lie 3-algebra associated with given

Janus Field Theories from Non-Linear BF Theories for Multiple M2-Branes

We integrate the nonpropagating Bμ gauge field for the non-linear BF Lagrangian describing N M2-branes which includes terms with even number of the totally antisymmetric tensor MIJK in

Comments on the Bagger-Lambert theory and multiple M2-branes

We study the SO(8) superconformal theory proposed recently by Bagger and Lambert as a possible worldvolume theory for multiple M2-branes. For their explicit example with gauge group SO(4), we rewrite

Comments on multiple M2-branes

Recently a three-dimensional field theory was derived that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of the worldvolume action for multiple M2-branes. In this note we examine several physical

On the problem of multiple M2 branes

A simplified version of 3d BL theory is considered, which allows any number N of M2 branes in d = 11. The underlying 3-algebra structure is provided by degenerate U(N) Nambu bracket [X, Y, Z] =

Modeling multiple M2-branes

We investigate the worldvolume theory that describes N coincident M2-branes ending on an M5-brane. We argue that the fields that describe the transverse spacetime coordinates take values in a

Gauge symmetry and supersymmetry of multiple M2-branes

In previous work we proposed a field theory model for multiple M2-branes based on an algebra with a totally antisymmetric triple product. In this paper we gauge a symmetry that arises from the

D2 to D2

Starting from maximally supersymmetric (2+1)d Yang-Mills theory and using a duality transformation due to de Wit, Nicolai and Samtleben, we obtain the ghost-free Lorentzian 3-algebra theory that has

N = 8 Superconformal Chern--Simons Theories

A Lagrangian description of a maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory in three dimensions was constructed recently by Bagger and Lambert (BL). The BL theory has SO(4) gauge symmetry and

Superconformal Chern-Simons theories

A Lagrangian description of a maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory in three dimensions was constructed recently by Bagger and Lambert (BL). The BL theory has SO(4) gauge symmetry and

Membranes on an orbifold.

An M theory interpretation of the recently discovered N=8 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with SO(4) gauge symmetry is provided to describe two membranes moving in the orbifold R8/Z2.
