}Nano- and micromolding of elastic materials produces smoothed replicas of the mold structures. This limits the technique's resolution. Here we identified surface tension as the cause of smoothing and derived explicit equations for calculating molded feature shapes. The characteristic length scale for smoothing is given by the ratio of the interface tension to Young's modulus of the molded material. This approach offers the possibility to correct for the smoothing caused by surface tension…

Biomimetic Polymer Surfaces by High Resolution Molding of the Wings of Different Cicadas

Bacterial cell studies show that the wing replicas possess the same antibacterial effect as the cicada wing from which they were molded, making it a highly accessible means of producing microstructured materials with biological properties.
Deformation of nanostructures on polymer molds during soft UV nanoimprint lithography.

The improved pattern transfer turns the direct and cost-effective soft UV-NIL into an interesting technique also for patterning tasks in the lower nanometer range, especially for small structural elements.
Surface tension and contact with soft elastic solids.

It is shown that, whereas the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts theory holds for particles larger than a critical, elastocapillary lengthscale, it fails for smaller particles, and adhesion of small particles mimics the adsorption of particles at a fluid interface, with a size-independent contact angle between the undeformed surface and the particle given by a generalized version of the Young's law.
Soft thermal nanoimprint with a 10 nm feature size.

This work produced a pattern with 10 nm critical dimensions, using electron beam lithography, and used it to replicate nanoimprint molds by direct casting of an elastomer onto the patterned resist, and showed that the produced pattern can be faithfully transferred from the mold by thermal nanoim printing.

The cells were progressively more spread and elongated as the sub- stratum rigidity increased, in an integrin β1 dependent manner, suggesting that the cell shape is primarily determined by the topographical cues.

This review provides a brief overview of patterning methods of various polymers with a particular focus on biocompatibility and processability and discusses how micro- and nanofabricated polymeric substrates of tunable elastic modulus can be used to engineer cell and tissue structure and function.
Surface elastic constants of a soft solid.
- Materials ScienceSoft matter
- 2018
Through microscopic observations of the contact-line geometry of a partially wetting droplet on an anisotropically stretched substrate, two surface-elastic constants are measured that quantify the linear dependence of the surface stress of a soft polymer gel on its strain.
