In this thesis we study several problems in the context of AdS/CFT. The first is that of gravitational phase transitions between AdS and dS geometries in the Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. Such transitions are mediated by thermalons and do not require matter fields. The phenomenon is strongly expected to be generic in higher curvatures theories of gravity. The second problem is the generation of new Supergravity backgrounds and the study of their holographic duals. We generate new examples of…

Gravitational AdS to dS phase transition in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this work, we revisit a toy model proposed by Camanho {\it this http URL.} [JHEP 10 (2015) 179] and extensively study the possible existence of gravitational phase transition from AdS to dS

Gravitational phase transition mediated by thermalon in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond gravity

In this work, we study the possible existence of gravitational phase transition from AdS to dS asymptotic geometries in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity by adding the Maxwell one-form field (Aμ) and the

Generalized Gravitational Phase Transition in Novel 4D Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet Gravity

In this paper, the possible existence of a thermal phase transition from asymptotic anti‐de Sitter (AdS) to de Sitter (dS) geometries in vacuum in the context of the novel fourdimensional

On AdS to dS transitions in higher-curvature gravity

A bstractWe study the possible existence of gravitational phase transitions from AdS to dS geometries in the context of higher-curvature gravities. We use Lanczos-Gauss-Bonnet (LGB) theory with a

A new AdS4/CFT3 dual with extended SUSY and a spectral flow

A bstractWe construct a new AdS4 background in Type IIB supergravity by means of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the Type IIA dual of ABJM. The analysis of probe and particle-like branes

Gauge/string duality in confining theories

This is the content of a set of lectures given at the “XIII Jorge André Swieca Summer School on Particles and Fields”, Campos do Jordão, Brazil in January 2005. They intend to be a basic introduction

Renormalization group flows from holography supersymmetry and a c theorem

We obtain first order equations that determine a supersymmetric kink solution in fivedimensional N = 8 gauged supergravity. The kink interpolates between an exterior anti-de Sitter region with

Anti-de Sitter space and holography

Recently, it has been proposed by Maldacena that large $N$ limits of certain conformal field theories in $d$ dimensions can be described in terms of supergravity (and string theory) on the product of

Generalized phase transitions in Lovelock gravity

We investigate a novel mechanism for phase transitions that is a distinctive feature of higher-curvature gravity theories. For definiteness, we bound ourselves to the case of Lovelock gravities.

AdS/CFT correspondence and geometry

In the first part of this paper we provide a short introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence and to holographic renormalization. We discuss how QFT correlation functions, Ward identities and

Reentrant phase transitions in rotating anti–de Sitter black holes

Introduction. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence, phase transitions in asymptotically AdS black holes allow for a dual interpretation in the thermal conformal field theory (CFT) living on the AdS
