A bstractWe consider the issues that arise out of interpreting the ghost-free bimetric theory as a theory of a spin-2 field coupled to gravity. This requires identifying a gravitational metric and parameterizing deviations of the resulting theory from general relativity. To this end, we first consider the most general bimetric backgrounds for which a massless and a massive spin-2 fluctuation exist, and we compute the most general expression for the Fierz-Pauli mass. These backgrounds coincide…

Aspects of Massive Spin-2 Effective Field Theories

General relativity describes gravity in terms of an interacting massless spin-2 field—the graviton. This 100-year-old theory has been spectacularly successful in explaining observations. However,

Observational constraints on bimetric gravity

Ghost-free bimetric gravity is a theory of two interacting spin-2 fields, one massless and one massive, in addition to the standard matter particles and fields, thereby generalizing Einstein’s theory

Constraints on bimetric gravity. Part II. Observational constraints

Ghost-free bimetric gravity is a theory of two interacting spin-2 fields, one massless and one massive, in addition to the standard matter particles and fields, thereby generalizing Einstein's theory

Theories of Massive Gravity in 2+1 Dimensions

This thesis is dedicated to the study of theories of massive gravity. The formulation of higher spin gauge field theories, along with a Chern-Simons (CS) like term for fields of higher spins is

Linear spin-2 fields in most general backgrounds

We derive the full perturbative equations of motion for the most general background solutions in ghost-free bimetric theory in its metric formulation. Clever field redefinitions at the level of

Ju l 2 01 3 A non-local theory of massive gravity

We construct a fully covariant theory of massive gravity which does not require the introduction of an external reference metric, and overcomes the usual problems of massive gravity theories (fatal

Analytical constraints on bimetric gravity

Ghost-free bimetric gravity is an extension of general relativity, featuring a massive spin-2 field coupled to gravity. We parameterize the theory with a set of observables having specific physical

Recent developments in bimetric theory

This review is dedicated to recent progress in the field of classical, interacting, massive spin-2 theories, with a focus on ghost-free bimetric theory. We will outline its history and its

Nonlinear interactions for massive spin-2 fields

We give a basic introduction to ghost-free nonlinear theories involving massive spin-2 fields, focussing on bimetric theory. After motivating the construction of such models from field theoretical

Spin-2 fields and the weak gravity conjecture

Recently, it has been argued that application of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) to spin-2 fields implies a universal upper bound on the cutoff of the effective theory for a single spin-2 field. We

Ghost-free massive gravity with a general reference metric

A bstractTheories of massive gravity inevitably include an auxiliary reference metric. Generically, they also contain an inconsistency known as the Boulware-Deser ghost. Recently, a family of

Bigravity and Lorentz-violating massive gravity

Bigravity is a natural arena where a nonlinear theory of massive gravity can be formulated. If the interaction between the metrics f and g is nonderivative, spherically symmetric exact solutions can

Multi-Metric Gravity via Massive Gravity

A generalization to the theory of massive gravity is presented which includes three dynamical metrics. It is shown that at the linear level, the theory predicts a massless spin-2 field which is

Massive Gravity theories and limits of ghost-free bigravity models

A bstractWe construct a class of theories which extend New Massive Gravity to higher orders in curvature in any dimension. The lagrangians arise as limits of a new class of bimetric theories of

Interacting spin-2 fields

A bstractWe construct consistent theories of multiple interacting spin-2 fields in arbitrary spacetime dimensions using a vielbein formulation. We show that these theories have the additional primary

Perturbations in massive gravity cosmology

A bstractWe study cosmological perturbations for a ghost free massive gravity theory formulated with a dynamical extra metric that is needed to massive deform GR. In this formulation FRW background

Cosmological perturbations of self-accelerating universe in nonlinear massive gravity

We study cosmological perturbations of self-accelerating universe solutions in the recently proposed nonlinear theory of massive gravity, with general matter content. While the broken diffeomorphism
