Abstract The Gulf of Tehuantepec is of particular oceanographic interest because it is one of the few places in the world where intense winds, known as Tehaunos, blow normal to shore in events of a few days duration. A short experiment with floats deployed within a few kilometres off the coast during one of these events, indicates that a remarkably coherent pattern of circulation results.
