On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, and Complexity in Project Management
@article{Pich2002OnUA, title={On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, and Complexity in Project Management}, author={Michael T. Pich and Christoph H. Loch and Arnoud De Meyer}, journal={Manag. Sci.}, year={2002}, volume={48}, pages={1008-1023} }
This article develops a model of a project as a payoff function that depends on the state of the world and the choice of a sequence of actions. A causal mapping, which may be incompletely known by the project team, represents the impact of possible actions on the states of the world. An underlying probability space represents available information about the state of the world. Interactions among actions and states of the world determine the complexity of the payoff function. Activities are…

Selectionism and Learning in Projects with Complexity and Unforeseeable Uncertainty
- Computer ScienceManag. Sci.
- 2004
If unforeseeable uncertainty is present and the team cannot run trials in a realistic user environment (indicating the project's true market performance), trial and error learning is preferred over selectionism, which can reverse an established result from computational optimization.
Dualities and dilemmas: contending with uncertainty in large-scale safety-critical projects
- Engineering
- 2016
Uncertainty is a fact of project life. Most decisions that are made on a safety-critical project involve uncertainty, the consequences of which may be highly significant to the safe and timely…
Modeling and Simulation of Project Management through the PMBOK® Standard Using Complex Networks
- EngineeringComplex.
- 2017
Through a complex network, the dynamic structure of a project and its trajectories are simulated using inference processes, leading to a decision making tool that identifies critical processes, thereby obtaining better performance outcomes of projects.
Managing Uncertainty in Complex Projects
- Engineering
- 2014
This work presents a method for project monitoring and control based on the idea of a project view: given an analysis dimension such as time, cost and quality, each participant in the project has its own view on the project execution.
Now, let's make it really complex (complicated): A systematic review of the complexities of projects
- Business
- 2011
A systematic review of relevant literature is presented and an integrated framework for assessing the complexities of managing projects is synthesised, which comprises five dimensions of complexity – structural, uncertainty, dynamics, pace and socio‐political complexity.
