The coefficient of sorting in sedimentary petrography is commonly considered to be the statistical measure $$\sqrt{Q_{1}}/{Q_{3}}$$ introduced by Trask. Several investigators have objected to the use of the Trask coefficient on theoretical grounds. Others have continued to uphold its usefulness.
