Conventional standard processors do not correspond well to these characteristics of MSP algorithms. Therefore, special architectural approaches are necessary for multimedia processors to deliver the required high processing power with efficient use of hardware resources. Function-specific ASICs dedicated to particular MSP subtasks can typically achieve highest performance levels at minimum cost for silicon area and optimized power consumption.
