Introduction This chapter presents an overview of the research on the effects of ethnic matching between therapist and client (EM) on therapy process and outcome. Racial differences in therapy received some attention in the late 1940s but no systematic empirical study was carried out and by the 1950s interest in the area had faded (Atkinson, 1985).
