Real time user independent facial expression recognition is important for virtual agents but challenging. However, since in real time recognition users are not necessarily presenting all the emotions, some proposed methods are not applicable. In this paper, we present a new approach that instead of using the traditional base face normalization on whole face shapes, performs normalization on the point cloud of each landmark. The result shows that our method outperforms the other two when the…

Pattern Averaging Technique for Facial Expression Recognition Using Support Vector Machines

TLDR
A novel feature extraction technique called the pattern averaging is studied on whole image data using reduction in the dimension of the image by averaging the neighboring pixels to give better results on standard datasets using support vector machine classifier.

A Facial Expression Recognition Model using Support Vector Machines

TLDR
An FER model is proposed using principal component analysis as the dimensionality reduction technique, Gabor wavelets and Local binary pattern as the feature extraction techniques and support vector machine (SVM) as the classification technique.

TLDR
The process of FER is explained which will further assist how a particular technique is modelled and an extensive survey of the latest techniques for FER has been presented comparing them based on their feature extraction technique, classification method and recognition rate.

Local Directional Ternary Pattern for Facial Expression Recognition

TLDR
This paper presents a new face descriptor, local directional ternary pattern (LDTP), for facial expression recognition that uses a two-level grid to construct the face descriptor while sampling expression-related information at different scales and shows that the approaches improve the overall accuracy of facialexpression recognition on six data sets.

Identity-Adaptive Facial Expression Recognition through Expression Regeneration Using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks

TLDR
This paper presents a novel approach (so-called IA-gen) to alleviate the issue of subject variations by regenerating expressions from any input facial images by training conditional generative models to generate six prototypic facial expressions fromany given query face image while keeping the identity related information unchanged.

Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis Based on Cognitive Methods in Virtual Environments and Emotions Analysis

TLDR
Novel AD's screening tests based on virtual environments using new immersive technologies combined with advanced Human Computer Interaction (HCI) systems are introduced and the use of emotion recognition to analyse AD symptoms has been proposed.

Constrained Local Neural Fields for Robust Facial Landmark Detection in the Wild

TLDR
The Constrained Local Neural Field model for facial landmark detection is presented, which introduces a probabilistic patch expert (landmark detector) that can learn non-linear and spatial relationships between the input pixels and the probability of a landmark being aligned.

A 3D facial expression database for facial behavior research

TLDR
This is the first attempt at making a 3D facial expression database available for the research community, with the ultimate goal of fostering the research on affective computing and increasing the general understanding of facial behavior and the fine 3D structure inherent in human facial expressions.

A high-resolution 3D dynamic facial expression database

TLDR
This paper presents a newly created high-resolution 3D dynamic facial expression database, which is made available to the scientific research community and has been validated through the authors' facial expression recognition experiment using an HMM based 3D spatio-temporal facial descriptor.

3D shape estimation in video sequences provides high precision evaluation of facial expressions

Cross-dataset learning and person-specific normalisation for automatic Action Unit detection

TLDR
This paper presents a real-time Facial Action Unit intensity estimation and occurrence detection system based on appearance (Histograms of Oriented Gradients) and geometry features (shape parameters and landmark locations) and demonstrates the generalisability of this approach.

The Extended Cohn-Kanade Dataset (CK+): A complete dataset for action unit and emotion-specified expression

TLDR
The Cohn-Kanade (CK+) database is presented, with baseline results using Active Appearance Models (AAMs) and a linear support vector machine (SVM) classifier using a leave-one-out subject cross-validation for both AU and emotion detection for the posed data.

Feature Detection and Tracking with Constrained Local Models

TLDR
This work shows that when applied to human faces, the constrained local model (CLM) algorithm is more robust and more accurate than the original AAM search method, which relies on the image reconstruction error to update the model parameters.

Point Set Registration: Coherent Point Drift

TLDR
A probabilistic method, called the Coherent Point Drift (CPD) algorithm, is introduced for both rigid and nonrigid point set registration and a fast algorithm is introduced that reduces the method computation complexity to linear.
