Nothing—the absence of spacetime—can be either an endpoint of tunneling, as in the bubble of nothing, or a starting point for tunneling, as in the quantum creation of a universe. We argue that these two tunnelings can be treated within a unified framework, and that, in both cases, nothing should be thought of as the limit of anti-de Sitter space in which the curvature length approaches zero. To study nothing, we study decays in models with perturbatively stabilized extra dimensions, which admit…
Nothing is certain in string compactifications
A bubble of nothing is a spacetime instability where a compact dimension collapses. After nucleation, it expands at the speed of light, leaving "nothing" behind. We argue that the topological and
De Sitter decays to infinity
Abstract Bubbles of nothing are a class of vacuum decay processes present in some theories with compactified extra dimensions. We investigate the existence and properties of bubbles of nothing in
Prepared for submission to JHEP de Sitter Decays to Infinity
Bubbles of nothing are a class of vacuum decay processes present in some theories with compactified extra dimensions. We investigate the existence and properties of bubbles of nothing in models where
The vecro hypothesis
We consider three fundamental issues in quantum gravity: (a) the black hole information paradox (b) the unboundedness of entropy that can be stored inside a black hole horizon (c) the relation
Sailing past the End of the World and discovering the Island
Large black holes in anti-de Sitter space have positive specific heat and do not evaporate. In order to mimic the behavior of evaporating black holes, one may couple the system to an external bath. In
The decay of hot KK space
The non-perturbative instabilities of hot Kaluza-Klein spacetime are investigated. In addition to the known instability of hot space (the nucleation of 4D black holes) and the known instability of KK
On String Vacua without Supersymmetry: brane dynamics, bubbles and holography
In this thesis we investigate some aspects of the dramatic consequences of supersymmetry breaking on string vacua. In particular, we focus on the issue of vacuum stability in ten-dimensional string
Equivalence between generalized phenomenological schemes for the interaction of cosmological fluids: applications to arbitrary linear barotropic fluids and vacuum decay
Interactions between cosmic fluids may appear in many cosmological scenarios that go far beyond the usually studied energy exchange in the dark sector. In the absence of known microscopic interaction
Waves in the Witten Bubble of Nothing and the Hawking Wormhole
We investigate the propagation of the scalar waves in the Witten space-time called “bubble of nothing” and in its remarkable sub-manifold, the Lorentzian Hawking wormhole. Due to the global
On the spacetime connecting two aeons in conformal cyclic cosmology
As quotient spaces, Minkowski and de Sitter are fundamental, non-gravitational spacetimes for the construction of physical theories. When general relativity is constructed on a de Sitter spacetime,

The dual of nothing
We consider ``bubbles of nothing'' constructed by analytically continuing black hole solutions in anti--de Sitter space. These provide interesting examples of smooth time-dependent backgrounds which
The tachyon at the end of the universe
We show that a tachyon condensate phase replaces the spacelike singularity in certain cosmological and black hole spacetimes in string theory. We analyze explicitly a set of examples with flat
Things fall apart: topology change from winding tachyons
We argue that closed string tachyons drive two spacetime topology changing transitions--loss of genus in a Riemann surface and separation of a Riemann surface into two components. The tachyons of
Bubbles from nothing
Within the framework of flux compactifications, we construct an instanton describing the quantum creation of an open universe from nothing. The solution has many features in common with the smooth 6d
The fate of four dimensions
In gravitational theories with extra dimensions, it is argued that the existence of a positive vacuum energy generically implies catastrophic instability of our four-dimensional world. The most
Bubbles of Nothing in Flux Compactifications
We construct a simple AdS{sub 4}xS{sup 1} flux compactification stabilized by a complex scalar field winding the single extra dimension and demonstrate an instability to nucleation of a bubble of
Bubbles of Nothing and the Fastest Decay in the Landscape
The rate and manner of vacuum decay are calculated in an explicit flux compactification, including all thick-wall and gravitational effects. For landscapes built of many units of a single flux, the
Decay of flux vacua to nothing
We construct instanton solutions describing the decay of flux compactifications of a 6d gauge theory by generalizing the Kaluza-Klein bubble of nothing. The surface of the bubble is described by a
Phantom Energy and Cosmic Doomsday
Cosmologists have long wondered whether the Universe will eventually re-collapse and end with a Big Crunch, or expand forever, becoming increasingly cold and empty. Recent evidence for a flat
Nothing for branes
Recent work on closed string tachyon condensation suggests the existence of a 'nothing state' where closed strings and space itself vanish. We consider the evolution of D-branes in such condensation
