ABSTRACT This paper examines the ontological status of individual substances; intuitive examples of such entities include particles and living organisms. My aim is to assess the ontological status of individual substances in the light of arguments for an ontology of [concrete] facts, often called states of affairs. Advocates of a fact ontology have argued that these factive entities are the ontologically fundamental beings. I will address the salient question of whether individual substances… 



The Unity of a Tractarian Fact

This paper compares Russell's and Wittgenstein’s versions of the thesis of an atomic fact that it is a complex composition to arrive at a claim that whilst Russell has one particular of the elements of a fact – the relation – responsible for the unity of the whole, for Wittgenstein the unity is the product of copulative powers inherent in all its elements.
