Following our previous findings of high extracellular redox activity in lichens, the results of the work presented here identify the enzymes involved as laccases. Despite numerous data on laccases in fungi and flowering plants, this is the first report of the occurrence of laccases in lichenized ascomycetes. Extracellular laccase activity was measured in 40 species of lichens from different taxonomic groupings and contrasting habitats.
