The occurrence of dwarf minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subsp.) around the Antarctic Peninsula was examined based on 406 sightings of minke whales recorded during the Chilean Antarctic Scientific Expeditions and other opportunistic cetacean surveys. Identification of the species was made only for the whales sighted in the proximity of the vessels when the specific diagnostic characters could be confirmed. Of the 406 sightings, 296 were assigned to Antarctic (519 individuals), nine (11…
Aerial surveys for Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) reveal sea ice dependent distribution patterns
TLDR
Very low numbers of AMWs recorded in the ice‐free waters along the WAP support the hypothesis that this species is strongly dependent on sea ice and that forecasted sea ice changes have the potential of heavily impacting AMWs.
Humpback whale songs during winter in subarctic waters
TLDR
The variety of song unit types in the songs increased at the end of the winter recordings, indicating a gradual change in the Songs throughout the winter season; as has been shown on traditional mating grounds.
Spatio-temporal patterns in acoustic presence and distribution of Antarctic blue whales Balaenoptera musculus intermedia in the Weddell Sea
TLDR
The results support increasing evidence of a complex and non-obligatory migratory behavior of Antarctic blue whales, potentially involving temporally and spatially dynamic migration routes and destinations, as well as variable timing of migration to and from the feeding grounds.
Influence of sea-ice structure on minke whale and other krill-predator distribution
This thesis investigated the extent to which sea-ice structure and complexity could be measured to identify suitable feeding habitat for krill-eating predators such as the Antarctic minke whale
Cetacean distribution in relation to environmental parameters between Drake Passage and northern Antarctic Peninsula
TLDR
This study explored the use of generalized additive models (GAMs) to model the relationships of some cetacean species according to sea surface temperature (SST) and a suite of physiographic variables adjacent to the Antarctic Peninsula and DP during the austral summer, suggesting that SST and distances from oceanographic boundaries were the most significant parameters related to the presence/absence of cetACEans.
Common and Antarctic Minke Whales: Conservation Status and Future Research Directions
Minke whales comprise some of the most widely distributed species of baleen whales, some of which are still regularly targeted by commercial whaling. Here, we review the conservation status of common

Summer sightings of dwarf minke whales ( Balaenoptera acutorostrata ) off the eastern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil
Twenty-two sightings of dwarf minke whales were made during shore-based surveys for cetaceans conducted from the Pontal do Atalaia headland, Arraial do Cabo, southeastern Brazil, in january 2001.
Biological observation on a dwarf minke whale ( Balaenoptera accutorostrata ), caught in southern Brazilian waters, with a new record of prey for the species
TLDR
Euphausia similis is reported for the first time as a prey species for dwarf minke whales and was heavily infested by anisakid nematode parasites.
Population structure and possible migratory links of common minke whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata, in the Southern Hemisphere
TLDR
The genetic evidence presented here was consistent with the hypothesis of migratory links among Brazil, Chilean Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula, and between low-latitude and Antarctic waters of the WSP, which may have conservation as well as taxonomic implications.
AN UNUSUAL RECORD OF THREE SPECIES OF WHALE BEING RESTRICTED TO POOLS IN ANTARCTIC SEA-ICE
TLDR
During the winter in the Crown Prince Gustav Channel in Graham Land, ice tends to form at the northerly end first, thus isolating pools of open water, which cut off nearly 200 whales from the open sea in 1955.
Cetacean mitochondrial DNA control region: sequences of all extant baleen whales and two sperm whale species.
TLDR
The findings suggest that the Antarctic minke whale should have a full species status, B. bonaerensis, and a close relationship between the gray whale (family Eschrichtiidae) sequence and those of the rorquals (family Balaenopteridae).
Cetacean records for the New Caledonian area (Southwest Pacific Ocean)
TLDR
These observations add 9 species to the previous- ly known species from New Caledonia, bringing the total number of cetaceans identified in this area to 13.
