Toxicity of mercury and its compounds is well-known and widely recognized and publicized. Measurable amounts of mercury, used for amalgamation during the gold recovery process, were lost during placer mining of gold in California and elsewhere. This mercury seems to be concentrated in clay slickens and in dredge pond sediment portions of old dredgings.
