Abstract The occurrence and toxicity of Amphidinium carterae Hulburt is hereby reported for the first time from the North Arabian Sea on the coast of Pakistan. The concentrations of 1.2 × 10 4  cells ml −1 were found in intertidal pools that were also inhabited by the brown macroalga Sargassum wightii. Both wild and cultured A. carterae cells were tested for ciguatera toxicity through exposure to brine shrimp nauplii ( Artemia salina ) and albino mice.
