Observations of the solar velocity field with a diode array attached to the echelle spectrograph of a vacuum tower telescope are described which resolve the solar five-minute oscillatory motion into distinct bands of power. Previous observations are discussed which show that the solar five-minute oscillations can be resolved into frequencies having the character of nonradial p-mode eigenfrequencies of the solar envelope. The present observations confirm the observed frequencies and sharpen the… Expand

Seismic Investigation of the Solar Interior
Observation of a large number of modes of solar oscillation has permitted detailed investigation of the solar interior. To illustrate the diagnostic potential of the frequencies, some properties ofExpand
A dispersion law for solar oscillations
The pressure or p-modes are acoustic vibrations trapped in a resonant cavity below the solar surface. The waves are most easily observed as primarily vertical velocities at the solar surface byExpand
An instrument to observe low-degree solar oscillations
We have constructed an instrument optimized to observe solar oscillations of low degree. The primary goal of this instrument, which we call LOWL, is to measure the frequency splitting of theExpand
Seismological studies of the sun and other stars
Abstract Observations of a large number of different oscillation frequencies in the Sun provide an opportunity for detailed testing of the theory of stellar structure and evolution. At present highlyExpand
Sensitivity of five minute eigenfrequencies to the structure of the sun
The dependence of theoretical eigenfrequencies of five minute oscillation modes on the parameters that determine model solar envelopes has been investigated. It was found that the p mode frequenciesExpand
Overstability of acoustic modes and the solar five-minute oscillations
The stability of linear convective and acoustic modes in solar envelope models is investigated by incorporating the thermal and mechanical effects of turbulence through the eddy transportExpand
Solar waves and oscillations.
Study of the generation and propagation of waves in the solar convection zone and atmosphere began with the realization in the late 1940s that such waves could carry mechanical energy from theExpand
Spectral-Spatial Analysis of Wave Motions in the Region of Temperature Minimum of the Sun’s Atmosphere
A spectral-spatial analysis is made in the region of temperature minimum of the Sun's atmosphere. Filtergrams in the Baii 4554 + 0.05 A line have been used. The wavelengths corresponding to theExpand

Seismology of the Sun and Stars
Ground-based observations of the spectrum of solar oscillations have already permitted us to put tight constraints on the hydrostatic stratification of the sun, and to infer the angular velocityExpand
