Most GIS implementations include Map Algebra procedures to express complex spatial analysis models, and to generate new maps from existing ones. However, most Map Algebra implementations (whether command-line languages or graphical user interfaces) are based on an explicit use of raster data structures, with very little semantic information available to the user.
