OR Forum - Perspectives on Queues: Social Justice and the Psychology of Queueing

Queues involve waiting, to be sure, but one's attitudes toward queues may be influenced more strongly by other factors. For instance, customers may become infuriated if they experience social injustice, defined as violation of first in, first out. Queueing environment and feedback regarding the likely magnitude of the delay can also influence customer attitudes and ultimately, in many instances, a firm's market share. Even if we focus on the wait itself, the “outcome” of the queueing experience…

Scheduling To Improve Queue Justice

This work considers the discrimination frequency as a basis for quantifying justice, where being discriminated means to be overtaken or to wait for customers with large service requirements, and indicates that MFD significantly improves queue justice without too much worsening mean response times.

Using ethnographic and interview data on IT support workers at a large university, it is shown how high-status individuals engage in three active management of waiting strategies that are patterned by organizational status and thus not only produce the status of the waiting individual but also exert a disciplinary effect on servers and help organizational status structures as a whole.
Measuring the Effect of Queues on Customer Purchases
- BusinessManag. Sci.
- 2013
It is found that waiting in queue has a nonlinear impact on purchase incidence and that customers appear to focus mostly on the length of the queue, without adjusting enough for the speed at which the line moves.

The range of possible fluctuations associated with a given equilibrium queue-length distribution is described for the GI/M/1 queue and the theory of complete Tchebycheff systems is applied to construct appropriate extremal distributions.
Perspectives on Queues: Combining Queues is Not Always Beneficial

There are reasons for believing that combining queues, especially queues of people, may at times be counterproductive, and the absence of published before-and-after studies helps clarify these reasons.
Deciding Which Queue to Join: Some Counterexamples

It is shown that there are service-time distributions for which it is not optimal to always join the shortest queue, and that if the elapsed service times of customers in service are known, the long-run average delay is not always minimized by customers joining the queue that minimizes their individual expected delays.
